(Yanwo / Bird's Nest) greatly nourishes Lung Yin (Lung Yin), moistens and resolves phlegm. Its taste is sweet and bland, nature is neutral. It greatly nourishes Lung Yin, resolves phlegm and stops coughing. It possesses the properties of tonifying while clearing, making it a sacred medicine for regulating deficiency consumptive diseases and tuberculous diseases (Lao Zhai). For all diseases resulting from Lung deficiency where Lung Qi cannot descend clearly and purify, this substance can be used to treat them. It opens the stomach qi, cures labor dysentery, and benefits children with smallpox/rash. (Wang Shimao in *Min Bu Shu* stated: Yanwo Cai [Bird's Nest Vegetable], people did not know what it was; it already existed by the sea in Zhangzhou. When swallows fly across the sea, when their wing strength becomes exhausted, they drop it onto the sea surface, floating like a cup, sitting within it for a long time, then picking it up again to fly. Chen Maoren in *Quan Nan Za Ji* stated: In the distant seas near foreign lands in Fujian, there is a swallow named "Golden Thread". Its head and tail resemble a swallow but are very small, and its feathers are like golden threads. When laying eggs and raising young, they flock near sandy mud areas with stones, pecking at silkworm snails. Someone asked maritime merchants, who heard from local natives that the flesh on the back of silkworm snails has two ribs, similar to maple silk, hard, clean, and white. Eating it can tonify deficiency and cure labor dysentery. Thus, after these swallows eat it, the flesh digests but the ribs do not, and together with saliva, they vomit it out, forming small nests attached to stones. Over time, they fly with their chicks. Seaside people collect them according to season, hence called Yanwo. However, I recently heard from people in Zhangzhou that this is entirely incorrect. In the country of Yanwo, in the great sea, there are high mountains. In winter, flocks of swallows come to nest on them. The swallow droppings are thick, reaching half the depth of one's knees. In spring, they catch small fish and pile them into the nests. People take them from the woods; the nests are destroyed, chicks fall, railings are overturned, male and female swallows mourn in groups, causing great harm to living things. Alas, who destroys the houses of the swallows? The suffering of life exceeds burning and cutting with knives. Su Changgong said that even if it were the beauty of the Eight Treasures, one would put down chopsticks and not bear to eat it. Is this the sentiment regarding this substance? Zhou Liyuan in *Min Xiao Ji* stated: While I was in southern Zhangzhou, asking those on the sea, all said swallows carry small fish and stick them to stones, which over time become nests. There are black, white, and red colors. Black is the lowest grade, red is the most rare, benefiting children with rashes; white can cure phlegmatic diseases. *Guangdong Xin Yu* stated: On stone islands in the sea of Yazhou, there is a Daimao Mountain. Its caves are all swallows' nests. Large swallows are like crows; upon eating fish, they spit out saliva to prepare food for molting in winter. Locals wearing leather clothes and hats, holding torches to explore, startle the swallows which pounce on people. The old and weak may fall off cliffs to their death. Thus, some gain much, others return empty-handed. Some say that on seaside stones, sea powder accumulates like moss. Swallows peck and eat it, spitting it out to form nests, hanging densely between rock walls. Islanders wait until autumn when swallows leave, using long poles with shovels to collect them. Sea powder is cold in nature, but becomes warm after being swallowed and spat out by swallows; sea powder is salty in taste, but becomes sweet after being swallowed and spat out by swallows. Its form and substance are completely transformed, thus it can resolve phlegm and open the stomach. Generally, there are black and white colors, red is rarely obtained. Swallows belong to Fire, and red represents their saliva. Another name is Yan Shu. Incense has dragon ambergris, vegetables have bird's nest. These supplement what plants lack, hence called vegetables. Elm meat is produced in the North, bird's nest in the South; both are vegetables.) It can be added to decoctions. One must use aged ones. Those colored like brown rice are best. Yanwo Jiao (Bird's Nest Feet). (Color is red-purple, named Blood Bird's Nest.) Functions are similar. Nature is heavy, capable of reaching the lower jiao. Taste is slightly salty, capable of moistening downward. Very effective in treating Yige (dysphagia/choking). Fake bird's nest has no edges and no hairs. (Or slight edge hairs, all artificially fabricated.) Color is white. (Some are as white as silver threads.)
