Tonifies Yang and nourishes essence.
Sweet and warm in nature. Strengthens Yang, benefits Qi, warms the waist and knees, replenishes essence, moistens the skin, reduces urination, and protects against wind-cold, mountain miasma, and epidemic qi. (Meng Shen said: For treatment, take fourteen *Shiyan* [Stone Swallow], stir-fry them with five-flavor herb until cooked, soak in one *dou* of wine for three days, drink one or two cups before bed each night; this greatly tonifies the body, making people strong and able to eat.) Also known as *Tu Yan* [Earth Swallow]. Resembles a bat. Square mouth. Feeds on rock milk. (*Guang Zhi* states: There are three types of swallows; this is the Earth Swallow that nurses its young in rock caves. Meng Shen said: *Shiyan* found in milk caves and stone holes can be eaten when harvested in winter, but can only be used for treating diseases in other months.)
Also known as *Tian Shushi* [Heavenly Rat Droppings] (bat droppings). Has purgative, blood-dispersing, and eye-brightening effects.
Pungent and cold. A drug entering the Liver channel blood level. Invigorates blood and dissipates accumulations. Treats blindness and visual obstructions. (When decocted with *Jue Ming Zi* [Arko Shell] and pig liver, it is named *Jue Ming Ye Ling San* [Bright Eye Night Spirit Powder], treating chicken-blindness.) Malaria and *Qiba* [childhood ghost disease]. Startling malnutrition. (Bats and their droppings both treat startling malnutrition, malaria, and epilepsy, which are diseases of the Jueyin channel.) Dry blood and qi pain. (*Ben Cao Jing Shu* says: Pungency can scatter internal and external stagnated qi, and coldness can eliminate blood heat and qi congestion; besides brightening the eyes, other effects may be disregarded. Wu Hegao in *Yi Fang Kao* says: Ancients often used *Mang Chong* [Blue Bottle Fly Larva] and *Shui Zhi* [Leech] to treat blood accumulations because they are good at sucking blood. Since *Tian Shushi* transforms from eating ants, it should also be able to attack blood accumulations. The original formula claims it expels dead fetuses, so there is no doubt about its ability to attack blood clots.) Burned together with *Die Jia* [Tortoise Shell] to repel mosquitoes. This is bat droppings. Bats eat mosquitoes, and *Yeming Sha* consists of mosquito eyes, thus it treats eye diseases. Wash clean and roast. Avoid using with *Bai Wei* [Cynanchum Atratum Root] and *Bai Lian* [Ampelopsis Japonica Rhizome]. (For childhood *Ba* disease, carry *Yeming Sha* in a red gauze bag.)
Has purgative, blood-moving, dispersing, and pain-relieving effects.
Sweet and warm, belonging to pure Yin. The flavor and aroma are dense. Enters the Liver channel blood level. Promotes free flow of blood vessels, disperses blood, and harmonizes blood. Can unblock blood stasis. (Use raw.) Can stop excessive menstruation. (Use stir-fried.) Treats blood bi, blood accumulation, bloody eyes, bloody dysentery, intestinal wind, and metrorrhagia. Various blood diseases. (*Ben Cao Tu Jing* says: For blood syncope, use half stir-fried and half raw, grind into powder, and take one qian.) All kinds of heart and abdominal pain due to qi and blood. Dispels wind and kills parasites. (All pains belong to Wood; all parasites are born from Wind.) Transforms phlegm and dissipates accumulations. Treats startling malnutrition, malaria, and hernia. Snake, scorpion, and centipede bites. (One liang of *Wulingzhi*, five qian of *Xiong Huang* [Realgar], mixed with wine for oral administration; apply the dregs to the affected area to treat snake bites.) Contraindicated in cases of blood deficiency without stasis. (Li Zhongnan in *Yong Lei Qian Fang* said: *Wulingzhi* for treating metrorrhagia is not a direct treatment but a wind-dispelling agent. When the Chong and Ren meridians are deficient and attacked by wind damaging the Ying blood, causing sudden heavy bleeding, it is similar in principle to using *Jing Jie* [Schizonepeta] and *Fang Feng* [Saposhnikovia] for metrorrhagia. This reveals the profound insight of the ancients. Li Shizhen said: This is another perspective, but it fails to address the meaning of wind generated internally due to Liver blood deficiency and stagnation. According to theory, the Chong meridian is the Sea of Blood, and the Ren meridian governs conception. When the Ren meridian is unblocked and the Chong meridian is vigorous, menstruation occurs on time without metrorrhagia, and conception is facilitated.) Droppings of a bird in the northern regions, named *Han Hao Chong Shi* [Cold Howler Bird Droppings]. (This refers to the *Huan Tou Niao* [Nightjar], which cries at night seeking dawn. In summer, its feathers display five colors; in winter, its feathers fall off, and it endures the cold crying, "Get by as best you can." Gao Shiqi stated: *Yue Ling* records that in the second month of winter, this bird does not cry, which seems inconsistent with the name "Cold Howler".) Black color. Strong foul odor. Those with a sugary center and moist texture are authentic. Grind into powder. Process with wine to remove sand and stones. Use raw for moving blood. Use stir-fried for stopping bleeding. Avoid using with *Ren Shen* [Ginseng]. (Mix *Wulingzhi* powder with oil and apply to treat leprosy-like conditions; effective.)
