Tonifies Yang and benefits essence.
Sweet and warm. Strengthens Yang Qi. (Chen Cangqi of the Tang Dynasty stated: Consuming it in winter stimulates sexual function and promotes fertility.) Benefits marrow and essence, warms the waist and knees, and reduces urination frequency.
Treats metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding) and leukorrhea. (Kou Zongshi of the Song Dynasty stated: It is suitable to consume before the first month and after the tenth month, as Yin and Yang are stable and undisturbed at these times; hence, eggs from the first clutch are preferred. Su Song of the Song Dynasty stated: Nowadays, people take sparrow meat, simmer it with Cnidium Fruit (Shechuangzi) to make a paste, mix it with medicinal ingredients to form pills, which are effective for lower jiao deficiency-cold, known as "Yima Wan" (Post Horse Pill). This method originated in the Tang Dynasty, where it was said Emperor Minghuang found it effective. The "Zonglu" text describes "Quefu Wan" (Sparrow and Aconite Pill) for deficiency-cold conditions, using 30-40 plump sparrow meats simmered with Aconite Root (Fuzi) to make pills, following this same principle.) Should not be consumed together with plums or various liver meats. Pregnant women should avoid eating it, as it may cause excessive lust in the child. Those with Yin deficiency and vigorous fire should not eat it. People taking Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) should avoid it. Commonly referred to as old sparrows being yellow sparrows. (In August and September, they fly in flocks over fields, becoming extremely fat, with fat on their backs like cotton wool; their nature and flavor are the same. They can be roasted and eaten, tasting very delicious. Nowadays, people use them to stew with chicken eggs, resulting in a rich and palatable dish.) Sparrow head blood treats night blindness (also known as sparrow eye). (The inability to see clearly at dusk, similar to how sparrows see poorly at night.)
Tonifies Yang and benefits essence.
Sour and warm. Benefits essence and blood. Treats impotence in men, leukorrhea in women, and difficult urination. Eliminates hernia and mass accumulation. (Tao Hongjing stated: Sparrows regulate Yin and Yang, so their eggs do likewise. When taken with Heaven's Hero Root (Tianxiong), it prevents penile atrophy. The *Suwen* states: Fullness in the chest, hypochondrium, and limbs interferes with eating. At the onset of the disease, one smells a fishy or foul odor, clear fluid is discharged, hemoptysis occurs first, limbs become cold, dizziness ensues, and frequent hematochezia and hematuria occur. This disease is named Blood Depletion (Xueku). It arises from massive blood loss in youth or intercourse while intoxicated, leading to Qi exhaustion and Liver injury, causing scanty or absent menstruation. The treatment uses four parts Cuttlefish Bone (Wumeiguz) and one part Rubia Root (Qiancao), combined and formed into pills with sparrow egg yolk/whole egg, sized like small beans. Five pills are taken as a post-meal dose, washed down with Mullet Juice (Baoyu Zhi) to benefit the intestines and heal Liver damage. Although the Materia Medica texts do not list these three herbs as direct treatments for Blood Depletion, the classic method uses them to address the root cause. Li Shizhen stated: People today know that sparrow eggs tonify male Yang deficiency but do not know they treat female Blood Depletion, precisely because sparrow eggs benefit essence and blood.)
