Kills parasites.
Sweet, astringent, and neutral in nature. Kills parasites. (For children with yellowish, emaciated appearance due to intestinal parasites, it is suitable for consumption.) Treats hemorrhoids and eliminates accumulation. Zhu Danxi said: This is a fruit of the Lung organ. Excessive consumption draws fire into the Lung, injuring the Large Intestine, and counteracts Mung Bean (Vigna radiata). (For those who prefer tea and noodles resulting in sallow complexion, eating seven Torreya seeds daily until cured is effective.)
Moistens dryness.
Sweet, warm in nature, and fragrant. Moistens the Lung, opens the stomach, disperses water qi, removes various wind pathogens, and treats Lung dryness cough. (Song Zi [Pine Nut] 1 liang, Hu Tao [Walnut] 2 liang, ground into paste, mixed with half a liang of cooked honey and stored.) Treats deficiency-type constipation. (Mixed with equal parts of Bai Zi Ren [Biota Seed] and Ma Zi Ren [Hemp Seed], ground into mud, melted white wax added to form pills, taken with Huang Qi Tang [Astragalus Decoction].) Contraindicated for those with loose stools and seminal emission; also forbidden for those with damp-phlegm.
Drains qi, promotes urination, breaks distension, and attacks hardness.
Bitter, warm in nature, breaks stagnation; pungent, warm in nature, disperses pathogens. Drains the supreme qi in the chest, causing it to descend. Its nature is heavy like iron or stone, capable of driving other herbs down to the lowest extremity. Breaks hard accumulations, reduces distension, digests food, moves phlegm, promotes urination, dispels wind, awakens from drunkenness, and kills parasites. Treats phlegm-rubella and mass formation, malarial fevers due to miasma, dysentery, edema, and Hong Kong Foot (Gouty Arthritis/Jamaica Itch). (If Hong Kong Foot attacks the heart, it is especially necessary to use; administered with child's urine, ginger juice, and warm wine.) Treats qi-constipation of both large and small intestines, tenesmus. (Either combined with Mu Xiang [Aucklandia Root] to regulate qi, or combined with Huang Qin [Scutellaria Root] and Zhi Ke [Immature Bitter Orange] to broaden the intestines.) Drives all qi down to the lowest point. Those with qi deficiency and sinking should avoid it. In Lingnan, where miasma is prevalent, people use Bing Lang [Areca Seed] as tea, which damages and leaks true qi; therefore, locals suffer from many diseases and have short lifespans. (Chicken-heart shaped Areca Seeds are good if they show brocade-like patterns when broken open. [To treat lice in pubic hair, decoct and wash with it, which removes them.] Avoid roasting over fire. For otorrhea, blow Bing Lang powder into the ear; for You Dan Du [Cellulitis/Erysipelas] starting from the umbilicus, apply Bing Lang powder mixed with vinegar.)
Purgative, descends qi, unblocks, promotes urination.
Pungent drains Lung qi; mild and warm benefits the Spleen. Descends qi, broadens the chest, promotes urination, and unblocks the large and small intestines. Treats edema, Hong Kong Foot, fullness and distension, phlegm obstruction, malarial fevers, and cholera. Do not use if there is any involvement of deficiency. Use the peel. Wash with wine, then wash again with Black Bean Decoction. (The Zhen Bird often perches on its tree, so it must be washed clean.) Roasted before use. The seed is pungent, astringent, and warm. It has the same function as Bing Lang but with slightly weaker potency. Its shape is also similar to Bing Lang, being large and flat on the abdomen. (Therefore, it is also known as Da Fu Bing Lang.)
