Zhi Ju Zi (Hovenia Dulcis Seed), also known as Mu Mi (Tree Honey) and Mu Tang (Tree Syrup). Its nature is moistening, and it resolves alcohol toxicity.
Sweet and neutral in flavor. It stops thirst and removes irritability, moistens the five Zang organs, and resolves alcohol toxins. (Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix) resolves alcohol and has a dispersing action, but is inferior to Zhi Ju Zi. Zhen Heng stated: A man suffered from fever due to drinking alcohol, compounded by sexual exhaustion. Ge Gen was added to Qi and Blood tonifying herbs. After one dose, he sweated slightly but became more fatigued, with the fever persisting. Realizing his Qi and Blood were deficient and that Ge Gen's dispersing nature was unsuitable, removing Ge Gen led to recovery.) Excessive consumption can trigger roundworms. The fruit is curled like a chicken's spur. (Thus commonly called Ji Ju (Chicken Spur).) After frost, it turns yellow-red and is very sweet. The bark treats five types of hemorrhoids and harmonizes the five Zang organs.
Moistens the Lungs and tonifies the Spleen.
Pungent, sweet, and fragrant. It moistens the Lungs and tonifies the Spleen; its balanced nature is precious. It originates from Fujian and Guangdong. It is a vine; fruits form after flowers fall to the ground, hence the name. Used after stir-frying. The above belong to the category of exotic fruits.
Chuan Jiao (Sichuan Pepper), also known as Shu Jiao (Shu Pepper). Its functions are unblocking, dispersing cold-dampness, drying dampness, and supplementing Mingmen Fire.
Pungent and extremely hot in nature. Toxic. Enters the Lung channel to induce sweating and disperse cold. Treats cough due to wind-cold. Enters the Spleen channel to warm the stomach and dry dampness, promotes digestion and removes distension. Treats cold pain in the heart and abdomen, vomiting, diarrhea, dysentery, phlegm-fluid retention, and edema. Enters the Right Kidney and Mingmen to supplement fire. Treats rebellious Kidney Qi. (It guides fire downward, leading dragon back to its source.) Yang deficiency leading to spermatorrhea, frequent urination, and scrotal sweating. (In cases where cold qi enters the scrotum causing swelling, fullness, pain, and distress, wrap Sichuan pepper in cloth, half cun thick, and apply below the scrotum. When heat flows freely, change twice daily until resolved. Alternatively, applying Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex) powder is also effective.) Breaks blood stasis and unblocks menstruation, expels parasites and calms roundworms. (Parasites subside upon smelling pepper. For abdominal pain caused by parasitic biting, the face is pale with red lips, and pain comes and goes.) Expels epidemic pathogens and latent evil, kills ghostly infections and fish/insect toxins. (Most effective against labor worms.) Unblocks blood vessels, eliminates flaccidity and bi-syndrome, moves joints, and benefits articulation. Suitable for those with Mingmen fire decline and cold-dampness. Contraindicated for those with Yin deficiency and hyperactive fire. (Dan Xi stated: Long-term consumption of pepper generates fire from water, causing much toxicity.) Produced in Sichuan; those with thick flesh and wrinkled skin are Chuan Jiao, slightly smaller than Qin Jiao. Remove closed-mouth peppers. (Closed-mouth peppers can be fatal.) Lightly stir-fry to remove oil/sweat, crush to remove the inner yellow shell, and use the red part. (Called Jiao Hong (Pepper Red)). Works well with salt. (Enters the Kidney channel). Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) serves as an assistant herb. Incompatible with Xiong Huang (Realgar), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos), cold water, and Ma Ren (Cannabis Semen). (Poisoning from pepper is resolved using cold water and hemp seed slurry.)
Jiao Mu (Pepper Seeds) (Functions: unblocking, promoting urination). Bitter and pungent, slightly toxic. Exclusively acts on the water pathways, not the grain pathways. Eliminates ascites, reduces distension, and calms asthma. The root is pungent and hot, killing parasites. Decocted as a wash for podagra and eczema.
