(Shuiyin / Mercury) Heavy in nature, externally used to kill parasites.
Pungent and cold, belonging to Yin toxicity. Its function is exclusively for killing parasites. It treats sores, scabies, lice, and nits. It resolves the toxicity of gold, silver, copper, and tin. (It can dissolve the five metals.) It causes abortion and sterilization. Its nature is slippery and heavy, penetrating directly into the flesh. (For head sores, it must absolutely not be used, lest the medicinal power enter the meridians, causing stiffness and contraction of muscles and bones; if it comes into contact with the male genitalia, it leads to impotence and lack of vital energy. Only by tying red gold to the affected area can it be managed, because Mercury coagulates when meeting Lead, and solidifies when meeting Sulfur, and only crumbles when ground with jujube pulp and saliva. Mercury scattered on the ground can be collected using pepper powder and tea powder. Mercury fears Magnetite and Realgar/Orpiment mixture [Bishuang/Arsenic Trioxide].)
(Qingfen / Calomel) Dry and astringent, seizing phlegm-saliva, externally used to kill parasites.
Pungent, cold, and dry. Toxic. Kills parasites and treats sores. Seizes phlegm and eliminates accumulations. (It can eliminate phlegm-accumulations.) It penetrates well into the meridians. It is sometimes used in medicines containing centipedes. It should not be taken lightly internally. (Li Shizhen said: Mercury is a Yin toxic substance, extracted from cinnabar by fire refining, and further refined with salt and alum into Qingfen. Its nature is light, rising, dry, and fierce, moving freely without staying put. Nowadays, people use it to treat yaws. Although it can seize wind-phlegm-dampness-heat and expel them from the gums, temporarily relieving the constrained pathogenic factors, the toxic vapors penetrate into the meridians and bones, consuming blood and essence. The sinews lose nourishment, transforming into tendon spasms and bone pain, carbuncles, sores, and fistulas, eventually becoming chronic disabilities, causing endless harm. The upper and lower gums belong to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians. Toxic vapors travel up along these meridians and exit at the tender gum tissue. Smilax glabra, Coptis chinensis, Black Lead, Iron Slurry, and aged vinegar can restrain its toxicity. Fen Shuang / White Mercurous Chloride has similar functions and drawbacks.)
(Fen Shuang / White Mercurous Chloride) Dry and astringent, breaking down accumulations and seizing phlegm.
Pungent and warm, toxic. Breaks down stagnations. Seizes phlegm-saliva. Disperses chest nodules. Treats scabies, tinea, and malignant sores. Kills parasites and lice. Its nature is dry and fierce, capable of corroding gums and causing tendon contractions. Its efficacy and drawbacks are the same as Qingfen and Fen Shuang. (Nowadays, cooks often use it to color food for consumption, which should be eliminated.)
(Xionghuang / Realgar) Heavy in nature, detoxifying and killing parasites.
Pungent and warm, toxic. Enters exclusively into the Jueyin Qi level. Searches out Liver Qi and disperses Liver Wind. Kills hundred toxins. Ward off evil spirits. Treats convulsions and epilepsy. Phlegm-saliva accumulations. Headache and dizziness. Summerheat malaria, dysentery, and diarrhea. (The *Yijian Zhi* records: Yu Yonggong said: While traveling, I was exposed to summerheat, suffering from diarrhea and dysentery for months. I dreamed of arriving in a fairy dwelling, where I was invited to sit. There were verses on the wall saying: Summerheat toxin resides in the Spleen, dampness connects to the feet; if not diarrhea, then dysentery; if not dysentery, then malaria. Alone refine Realgar, mix medicine with steamed dough, decoct Licorice root as soup, consume it for peace and joy. Seeking other treatments is a great error by physicians. Following this prescription led to recovery.) It can also transform blood into water. Dries dampness and kills parasites. Treats consumptive disease with infantile malnutrition (Lao Gan) and snake bites. (When burned, snakes flee far away.) Applied topically for yaws, carbuncles, scabies, tinea, hemorrhoids, and ulcers. Greatly contraindicated for those with Blood deficiency. Grown on the sunny side of mountains, red like a rooster's comb, bright and clear without odor. Those weighing three to five taels are of good quality. Soak in vinegar, boil dry in radish juice. Grown on the shady side of mountains is named Xiehuang / Orpiment, with similar functions but inferior quality. Inferior ones are called Xun Huang, which smell bad when burned, suitable only for fumigating sores and killing lice. (For阴肿 like a beanbag, use Realgar and Alum each two liang, Licorice root one chi, water five sheng, boil to two sheng, soak the affected area.)
