(White Quartz) Heavy in nature, moistens the Lung.
Sweet, acrid, slightly warm. Moistening to dispel dryness. (The *Shi Ji* [Ten Categories of Medicinals] states: "Wet agents can treat witheredness; White Quartz and Purple Quartz are examples.") Promotes urination. Consolidates the Large Intestine.
Treats lung abscess with expectoration of pus. Cough and rebellious Qi rising. Mineral drugs are ultimately drying; they should only be used temporarily. (There are many moistening herbs, but Xu Zhicai selected White Quartz and Purple Quartz as moistening agents; preserving this intent is acceptable.) Those that are white like crystal are superior.
(Purple Quartz) Heavy in nature, calms the Heart Spirit, moistens, nourishes the Liver.
Sweet, acrid, warm. Heaviness dispels timidity; moisture dispels witheredness. Restless Heart Spirit. Deficiency of Liver Blood. Deficient cold in the Sea of Blood in women; suitable for those with infertility.
(The Chong Mai [Penetrating Vessel] is the Sea of Blood; the Ren Mai [Conception Vessel] governs the uterus. The *Jing Shu* states: "In women, the uterus is connected to the Kidney and Pericardium; when deficient, Wind-Cold invades, thus causing infertility; Purple Quartz is acrid and warm, enters these two meridians, disperses Wind-Cold, anchors the Lower Jiao, and is a key herb for warming the uterus.") Pale purple in color. (The five colors of quartz correspond to the Five Zang Organs.) Crystalline and transparent, with five facets.
Quench seven times in vinegar, grind into powder, and process by water levigation. Both White and Purple Quartz fear Aconite (*Fuzi*) and dislike Coptis (*Huanglian*). (According to *Rihua Bencao*, for treating carbuncles and toxic heat, quench Purple Quartz in vinegar, grind to powder, decoct with fresh ginger and rice vinegar, apply externally; massage is also effective.) Above are classified as Jade-type minerals.
(Cinnabar) Heavy in nature, calms the Heart Spirit, stabilizes fright, drains heat.
Sweet, cool. Its substance is Yang but contains Yin. (Contains Yin Mercury; Zheng Kangcheng's commentary on the *Zhou Li* lists Cinnabar, Realgar, Schorl, Alum, and Magnetite as the Five Poisons.)
Red in color, belongs to Fire. (Its nature is contrary to being hot because Li hexagram is hollow in the middle, containing Yin; its taste is not bitter but sweet because Fire contains Earth.) Drains pathogenic Heat from the Heart Meridian. (It is the principal herb for the Blood aspect of the Heart Meridian.) Calms the Heart Spirit, stabilizes fright. Expels evil, clears the Liver, brightens the eyes, dispels Wind. Relieves thirst, detoxifies. (Suitable for fetal toxin and smallpox toxin.) Stabilizes mania. Stops toothache. Expels dead fetus. (*Shiquan Boji Fang* records: Decoct 1 liang in water, grind, and take with wine.) Used alone or in large doses causes dullness and mental stagnation. Produced in Chen region. Those bright like arrowheads are superior.
Water levigate three times. (If calcined by fire, it becomes toxic; ingestion often causes death.) Fears salt water. Dislikes Magnetite.
Contraindicated with all blood products.
