(Mi Tu Seng, Litharge) possesses heavy and sedative properties; it settles fright, eliminates phlegm, and resolves accumulations.
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature. It has slight toxicity. It forms through the interaction of silver and lead vapors. It descends phlegm, calms fright, stops bleeding, dissipates swelling, resolves accumulations, kills parasites, treats sores and toxic swellings, and relieves bromhidrosis (fox odor).
(Apply mixed with oil to the armpits, or steam a steamed bun, split it open, sprinkle the powder inside, and clamp it under the armpit; this is also effective.) Removes scars. Dyes eyebrows and beard. Treats malaria, dysentery, and five types of hemorrhoids. For metallic wounds and frostbite. (Apply mixed with refined tung oil.) Ingestion causes coldness in the middle jiao (middle burner). It originates from silver mines and is rare. The material used today is the dross poured from the bottom of silver smelting furnaces, boiled for one double-hour (two hours) before use.
(Yun Mu, Mica) possesses heavy and sedative properties; it pacifies the Liver, unblocks obstructions, and directs Qi downward.
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, and toxic. It treats visual obscurations and blood stasis in the eyes. It corrodes necrotic tissue. It treats difficult labor, abnormal fetal presentation, epigastric and abdominal pain, amenorrhea, and five types of strangury. It can be calcined and quenched in vinegar, or boiled to extract the juice. (If the lips turn black and are unbearable in pain and itching, grind pig fat on a stone and apply the juice; it heals after a few applications. If vision is suddenly lost, grind the mineral on a stone, extract the juice, and instill into the eye.) (Note: "Zhong" refers to swelling.)
(Tie Luo, Iron Filings) possess properties of descending phlegm and calming fright.
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, and toxic. They calm the Heart and pacify the Liver. They settle fright and treat mania. They resolve abscesses and detoxify. (Li Shizhen stated: Most herbs avoid iron vessels, but those tonifying the Kidney especially must avoid them.) They are incompatible with Ci Shi (Magnetite) and Zao Jia (Gleditsia sinensis fruit). (Burning Gleditsia wood as fuel causes pots to crack.) The filings struck off an iron anvil are called Tie Luo (Iron Filings). (These are iron shavings; the *Su Wen* uses them to treat manic rage; ground into powder and applied to tinea, they are very effective.) Those that rise like dust are called Tie Jing (Iron Essence). Rust on utensils is called Tie Xiu (Iron Rust). Those precipitated by salt and vinegar are called Tie Hua (Iron Flowers). (Li Shizhen stated: Generally, they utilize the metal element's descending nature to subdue Wood [Liver], causing descent and detoxification, without other profound meanings.)
(Zhen Sha, Needle Sand) possesses heavy properties and resolves edema. It resolves edema-related jaundice. Dissipates goiter and tumors. Blackens hair. This is the fine powder produced by needle-makers during grinding. Only true steel sand is suitable for use. (People often mix soft iron sand to counterfeit it, flying it into powder, which others cannot distinguish.) The above belong to the Metal category.
(Yun Mu, Mica) has the function of directing Qi downward.
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature. Its color is white. It enters the Lung meridian to direct Qi downward. It consolidates muscle tissue and reconnects severed tendons/bones. It treats malaria, dysentery, carbuncles, and sores. (Boiled together with Huang Dan (Lead Oxide) to make a plaster for application; cited from *Qian Jin Yi Fang*, used for dressing metallic wounds.)
Mica comes in five colors. The best quality is white, lustrous, and crystal-clear. Ze Xie (Alisma rhizome) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with mutton. (For metallic wound bleeding, applying Mica powder externally is excellent.)
