(Baiji, *Bletillae Rhizoma*): Astringent; tonifies Lung Qi (Lung energy); resolves blood stasis to generate new blood.
(Sanqi, *Notoginseng Radix*): Bitter and pungent, neutral in nature. Its property is astringent and收敛 (restraining), complying with the command of Autumn Metal. Enters the Lung meridian to stop hematemesis. (Excerpted from *Yuan*: Test for blood type—blood floating on water is Lung blood; sinking is Liver blood; half-floating/half-sinking is Heart blood. According to observation, dip sheep lung, liver, or heart in Baiji powder and take daily for good results.) For lung damage, it can regenerate tissue. (Because form generates form; among the five zang organs, only lung lobes can regenerate.) Treats contusions and bone fractures. (Take 2 qian with wine.) Scalds and burns. (Mix powder with oil and apply externally.) Malignant sores, carbuncles, abscesses, necrotic ulcers, and dead muscle tissue; removes putrid flesh, expels blood stasis, generates new tissue, clears facial discoloration (Qi gan, pronounced 'gan', falling tone: dark complexion/face qi) and facial acne (Pao, pronounced 'pao': facial sores). Applies to cracked hands and feet, making skin smooth. Zi Shiyin (Purple Quartz) serves as the guiding herb. Incompatible with Xingren (Apricot Seed). Antagonistic to Wutou (Aconite Root). (For polyglottis and thrush, grind into powder, mix with milk, and apply to the sole of the foot.)
Also known as Shanqixie; disperses blood stasis and alleviates pain.
Sweet and bitter, slightly warm. Disperses blood and stops pain. Treats hematemesis, epistaxis, bloody dysentery, metrorrhagia, red eyes, carbuncles, and swelling. (Grind with vinegar and apply; swelling dissipates immediately. For ulcerated lesions, apply powder directly.) It is a crucial herb for treating metal wounds and beating injuries. (Take 1-2 qian before being beaten to prevent blood rushing to the heart; after beating, apply externally to remove stasis, reduce swelling, and facilitate healing. Generally, it is a herb for the Blood aspect of the Yangming and Jueyin meridians, thus treating blood diseases.) However, it may damage new blood; do not use if there is no blood stasis. Sanqi from caves in Guangxi resembles Baiji slightly. The longer ones resemble aged Diquan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), have nodes, taste slightly sweet, and resemble Ginseng. When powder is mixed into pig's blood, if the blood turns into water, it is authentic. (There is another variety: leaves resemble Ju'ai but are tougher and thicker, with forked tips; stems have red ridges; blooms yellow flowers in summer and autumn with golden-wire-like stamens that are coiled and lovely, but lacks fragrance; roots are large like Niubang (Arctii Fructus), taste sweet, propagate easily. Claimed to be Sanqi, very effective for metal wounds, fractures, and blood diseases, differing from those coming from the South.)
