Gleditsiae Spina (Spine of Gleditsia sinensis): Promotes circulation, opens orifices, and resolves abscesses.
Acrid and warm in nature. It searches out wind pathogens and kills parasites. Its efficacy is similar to that of Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus). Its sharp action reaches the disease site directly, causing carbuncles and sores to suppurate and disperse. It treats swelling toxins and Du Ru (breast abscess, where milk stasis forms a lump internally). It treats Feng Li (leprosy-like conditions caused by wind-cold invading the vessels and stagnating with hot Ying Qi; as stated in the classics: "Vessels affected by wind become Li"; since vessels and Ying are both related to blood, it is steamed, dried, powdered, and taken with Dahuang Decoction). It treats tinea corporis (apply paste of tender spines boiled in rice vinegar topically). It treats retention of the placenta. It is a divine medicine for carbuncles and sores before they have ulcerated. It should not be used after ulceration. Pregnant women should also avoid it. The leaves can be used to wash wind-related skin sores.
Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus): Drains heat and detoxifies.
Acrid, warm, and slightly toxic. It dispels wind-dampness and removes grease and dirt (commonly used for bathing the body and washing the face). It treats unnamed swellings and toxins with miraculous effects. (For any strange ulcers or malignant toxins, take raw Zaojiao, remove the seeds, rind, and tendons, pound into a paste, mix with vinegar, and apply externally for immediate cure; if not cured, reapply. This prescription is not recorded in medical books but is very convenient for poor people in remote areas who lack medicines urgently.)
Shuiyang Zhuye (Branches and Leaves of Salix integra): Promotes circulation of Qi and Blood.
Bitter and neutral in nature. It treats smallpox lesions that are depressed at the apex with stagnant pus that fails to rise. Boil in water for bathing. (This condition arises from Qi stagnation and Blood stasis, or external constraint by wind-cold. Use Shuiyang branches and leaves; if leaves are unavailable, use five jin of tender branches with one fu of running water, boil for a warm bath. Add hot water if it cools down. After some time, observe if the lesions rise with a halo, indicating pus flow. If not sufficient, bathe again. For deficient patients, only wash the head, face, hands, and feet. If lesions do not rise after repeated baths, the prognosis is fatal. Do not bathe during the initial eruption or when lesions are itchy and collapsed. Internal administration of Qi- and Blood-nourishing herbs will accelerate efficacy. This method has the subtlety of regulating Yin and Yang, akin to the principle that when the Huangzhong pitch-pipe blows ash, hibernating insects emerge, and when the east wind blows, hard ice thaws.)
Xihe Liuye (Leaves of Tamarix chinensis), also known as Chichengliu: Promotes circulation and detoxifies.
Sweet, salty, and neutral. It dissipates masses, resolves alcohol toxicity, promotes urination, treats various wind disorders, and resolves various toxins. Recently, it has been used to treat sand-rash (sha zhen) heat toxins that fail to vent outward. Used as a dispersing agent. Take four qian of powder orally to treat sha rash that does not erupt, accompanied by wheezing, coughing, and restlessness. Mix with rock sugar and take orally to treat dysentery following the eruption of rash.
