To drain the fire of the Heart and Liver.
Bitter, salty, cold in nature. Sheep belong to Fire, whereas the Antelope belongs to Wood. It enters the Foot Jueyin Meridian (Liver) and the Hand Taiyin and Hand Shaoyin Meridians (Lung, Heart). The eyes are the orifice of the Liver.
By clearing the Liver, it brightens the eyes and removes obstructions. The Liver governs Wind and its exterior correspondence is the sinews; by dispelling Wind and relaxing the sinews, it treats convulsions and spasms due to fright-epilepsy. It treats bone pain and sinew contracture. The Liver stores the Hun (Ethereal Soul), and the Heart governs the Shen (Spirit); by draining pathogenic heat from the Heart and Liver, it treats mania, aberrant behavior, nightmares, and fright. The Liver governs Blood and has a blood-dispersing effect; thus, it treats blood stasis, foul blood, bloody dysentery, and swelling/toxins. The Ministerial Fire resides in the Liver and Gallbladder, and its emotional expression is Anger. (The Classics state: "Great anger causes the form and Qi to sever, and blood stagnates above.") By directing Qi downward and descending Fire, it treats latent heat from Cold Damage, vexation and fullness, rebellious Qi, and food impaction. The Antelope is spiritually agile, and its essence concentrates in its horn; therefore, it also wards off evil and resolves various toxins. (Currently, dermatology departments often use it to clear Liver Fire.) Its nature is cold and can damage the vital generating energy; it should not be used if there is no heat-fire condition. It originates from the Western Regions. It resembles a sheep but is larger, with segmented horns that are extremely hard and tough, capable of crushing diamond and Tapir bone. ("Tapir" is pronounced Mai, and it can eat iron.) At night, it roosts to prevent danger, hanging its horn on trees to rest. (Those with hanging marks on the horn are genuine; those with sparse segments on one side are mountain donkeys or goats, not antelopes.) Those that are bright and have black-free tips are of good quality. Usually, there are two horns; having only one horn is even superior. It is crushed and ground into an extremely fine powder, or ground for juice use.
Greatly tonifies Yang and replenishes Essence and Blood.
Sweet, salty, warm in nature. It replenishes Essence and tonifies Marrow, warms the Kidney and assists Yang, strengthens bones, and promotes tooth growth. It treats Kidney deficiency-cold in the lower back, soreness and pain in the four limbs, dizziness, and blurred vision. It treats all types of deficiency injuries and consumptive disorders. In children, it treats dry retraction of smallpox lesions. (When used with Ginseng, the effect is excellent.) When Deer Antler first grows, it is two or three cun long, branching like a saddle, red as agate. Those that break like rotten wood are of good quality. (Too tender ones lack sufficient Qi and Blood and efficacy.) They are coated with clarified butter, scalded to remove hair, and lightly roasted. (If not coated with butter, the velvet will be damaged.) Some are processed with wine; their odor should not be sniffed, lest insects enter the nose and pharynx. (Hunters capture deer, tie them up to take the antlers, and then kill the deer, because the blood has not yet dispersed. Thus, it is most difficult to obtain antlers that are unbroken and without bleeding.)
