Externally applied, it astringes metal wounds (traumas caused by metal weapons) and promotes muscle regeneration.
When the flesh of an elephant becomes swollen and congested, piercing it with a knife allows it to heal within half a day. To treat metal wounds that fail to close, use the ash of elephant skin; it can also be boiled into an ointment and added to powders. It is an essential medicine for healing metal wounds and a miraculous elixir for promoting muscle growth. (Burned to ash and mixed with oil, applied externally to chancre, it is highly effective.)
Clears away excessive heat in the Heart and Stomach.
Bitter, sour, salty, and cold in nature. It cools the Heart and drains the Liver, clears excessive heat in the Stomach, dispels wind and benefits phlegm, wards off evil pathogens, and detoxifies. It treats jaundice and macules/petechiae caused by Cold Damage (Shanghan) and seasonal epidemics. (If purgatives are used too early in Cold Damage, heat enters the Stomach through deficiency causing macules; if used too late, heat remains in the Stomach, also causing macules.) It treats hematemesis and hematochezia, mania due to blood stasis, blackened and depressed acne/variola, dissipates carbuncles and transforms pus, calms fright, and brightens the eyes. (Li Shizhen said: The five zang and six fu organs all receive qi from the Stomach. Wind pathogens and heat toxins must first affect them, and food and drugs must first enter the Stomach. Rhinoceros horn is where its essence gathers; it belongs to the Foot Yangming Stomach channel. Therefore, it can enter the Yangming channel, resolve all toxins, treat all blood disorders, and conditions such as fright, mania, macules, and variola. Baopuzi states: The rhinoceros eats the toxins of hundred herbs and thorns, thus it can detoxify. If food is toxic, stirring it with a horn produces white foam. Duan Gonglu's *Buhu Lu* states: Whenever one is wounded by a poisoned arrow, piercing the wound with a rhinoceros horn leads to immediate recovery.) Its nature is extremely cold. Unless there is excessive heat, one dare not take it lightly. Pregnant women taking it may abort the fetus. Those that are black and lustrous are superior, especially the tip of the horn. (For deer, the velvet antler is taken; for rhinoceros, the horn tip is taken, as their essence resides therein.) Ready-made artifacts are mostly used in preparations; grind into juice or add to pills and powders. Finely chopped, wrap in paper and place in the bosom; when warmed by body heat, pound it, and it will shatter immediately. (Ouyang Xiu's *Guotian Lu* mentions: Human breath heats powdered rhino horn.) Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) serves as the guiding herb. Avoid salt. (For bloody diarrhea due to heat, use equal parts Rhinoceros Cornu, Sanguisorbae Radix, and Rehmanniae Radix, grind into powder, make honey pills the size of a bullet, take one pill per dose, decoct with one cup of water until half remains, strain, and take warm.)
Clears heat.
Bitter and cold. Cools the Heart, pacifies the Liver, brightens the eyes, kills parasites. Treats epilepsy and five types of hemorrhoids. (Applied externally, it cures.) Suitable for excess-heat patterns; contraindicated for those with deficiency. Transparent quality is best. (Its nature is good at repelling dust; when thrown onto water with dust, adding a little gallstone rice causes the water to separate.) The meat tonifies weakness and emaciation; the palm resists wind and cold. It also supplements qi and strength.
