To promote circulation, disperse smallpox/rash eruptions, and ward off evil qi.
Pungent and warm in nature. Slightly toxic. Primarily aids in the digestion of grains, relieves headache, unblocks qi in the lower abdomen and heart orifices, and promotes the free flow of the large and small intestines. Its aromatic quality is penetrating; it wards off all kinds of abnormal pathogenic factors.
For miasma rashes and smallpox that fail to erupt: Decoct in wine and spray externally. (If rash/smallpox fails to erupt, boil wine until bubbling, ensuring no vapor escapes. After cooling, strain the dregs. Gently spray the body from the neck downwards to ensure even coverage, avoiding the head and face. Cover to keep warm, and the eruption will appear.) Long-term consumption damages the spirit and causes forgetfulness. Patients consuming it may experience weakness in the legs. (For infant erysipelas [red skin inflammation], apply juice of Coriandrum sativum externally. For black spots on the face, wash daily with decoction of Coriandrum sativum.)
Anciently called "Xiang". Drying in nature, tonifies Kidney Mingmen, treats cold hernia.
Pungent and warm. Warms the Dantian, tonifies Mingmen, opens the stomach for appetite, regulates the Middle Jiao to stop vomiting, treats cold qi in the small intestine, and hernia with scrotal swelling. (Hernia comprises seven types: Qi, Blood, Cold, Water, Sinew, Fox, and Zha. It belongs to the Liver Meridian because the Jueyin Liver channel connects with the genital organs. It is mostly caused by cold-dampness, but may also involve deficiency. Ginseng and Atractylodes macrocephala should be added to warming and dispersing formulas.) Abdominal pain, cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, dry and damp Hong Kong foot [podagra/foot rot]. May cloud vision and induce sores. Contraindicated for those with frequent erections or who vomit upon exposure to heat. Produced in Ningxia. Fruit size like wheat grain, light in weight with fine ridges. (For hernia qi entering the kidney, stir-fry fennel seeds into two hot packs and alternate applying them as a compress to the affected area.)
Also known as Aniseed (Anethum graveolens). Regulates qi and opens the stomach.
Pungent and neutral in nature. Regulates qi and opens the stomach; also treats cold hernia. Suitable as a culinary spice. (When cooking meat with an off-odor, adding a small amount eliminates the smell; adding powder to foul sauce restores fragrance. Large fennel is particularly effective, hence the name "Fennel".) Smaller than millet seeds. Best when stir-fried until yellow. Synergistic with wine. Salt directs it into the Kidney meridian, dispersing Kidney pathogens, thus treating Yin hernia. (Pathology originates in the Liver, manifestations appear in the Kidney. Use 1 liang each of Large Fennel and Small Fennel, powdered. Place inside one pig bladder along with urine, simmer thoroughly in wine, and form into pills. Take 50 pills per dose.) Star Anise (also known as Bo Fennel). Pungent, sweet, and neutral. Functions are similar. Introduced via foreign merchant ships. Fruit is large like cypress seeds, splitting into eight lobes, each containing one seed. Yellowish-brown in color.
