Nature is light, with the functions of releasing the exterior, harmonizing the interior, diffusing and unblocking Yang Qi, and invigorating blood.
Pungent in dispersion and neutral in temperature. (Tao Hongjing stated: Scallion white is cold, scallion green is hot; in formulas for Cold Damage, scallion green must not be used.) It induces sweating and releases the muscle layer. It unblocks Yang Qi throughout the upper and lower body. (In Zhang Zhongjing's Bai Tong Tang [White Unblocking Decoction] and Tong Mai Si Ni Tang [Unblock Pulse Four Reversal Decoction], scallion white is added to unblock the pulse and restore Yang; especially when there is facial redness due to floating Yang repelled upwards, it is particularly necessary to use it.) It treats headache caused by Cold Damage.
It treats fever and mania from epidemic diseases. Yin toxicity abdominal pain. (For Yin syndrome with cold extremities, place scallion white on the navel and apply heat.) It treats podagra (Hong Kong foot) and Ben Tun [Rushing Pig] qi. It benefits the eyes. (The white part of the eye belongs to the Lung.) It relieves tinnitus. It promotes urination and defecation. (Li Shizhen said: Blowing salt into a urethra-inserted scallion white is extremely effective for treating urinary retention and critical cases of bladder displacement.) When Qi flows freely, Blood moves actively. (Qi is the commander of Blood.) Therefore, it treats hematemesis [vomiting blood], epistaxis [nosebleed], hematochezia [blood in stool], bloody dysentery, and bleeding from traumatic injuries. (Roasted over fire, ground, and applied externally, it stops pain without leaving scars.) It treats breast abscess [Ru Yong] and wind-bi [wind-damp obstruction]. It promotes lactation and calms the fetus. (Combined with Fermented Soybean Paste [Xiang Chi] and Donkey-hide Gelatin [E Jiao], it treats restless fetus.) Because it promotes Qi flow, it can detoxify. It neutralizes drug poison, fish/meat poison, and earthworm poison. Applied topically, it treats dog bites.
Excessive consumption causes mental confusion and hair loss. It triggers upward rushing of deficient Qi. Use the white part, preferably with the roots. Consuming it with honey can be fatal. (The *Bai Yi Fang* records: For patients with external hemorrhoids, first fumigate and wash with a decoction of Momordica charantia seed [Mu Bie Zi], then apply a paste made of scallion juice mixed with honey, which feels as cool as ice.] Consuming it with dates causes illness. Consuming it with dog meat or pheasant meat causes blood disorders.
Scallion green leaves treat edema with swollen feet. (Boil stems and leaves to make a decoction for soaking, three to five times daily, which is excellent.) Juice: (For traumatic wounds with bleeding, take scallion, heat it, and apply the juice.)
Xie [Allium macrostemon / Chinese Leek]. Nature is slippery, promoting orifices and draining stagnation.
Pungent and bitter, warm and slippery. It directs Qi downward and harmonizes the Middle Jiao. It disperses blood and generates flesh. It drains Qi stagnation in the Lower Jiao and Large Intestine. It treats dysentery with tenesmus. (Li Haogou said: Tenesmus is due to Qi stagnation; adding Xie to Si Ni San [Four Reversal Powder] drains the stagnation. Note that tenesmus varies according to Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency, Fire-Heat, or Wind-Dryness; treatment should follow the pattern differentiation, do not adhere rigidly to one theory.) It treats chest bi [obstruction] with stabbing pain and asthma/wheezing due to Lung Qi rebellion. (Utilizing its slippery and draining nature.) It calms the fetus and facilitates childbirth. Applied topically, it treats burns and scalds. (Mashed with honey.) As a slippery and lubricating substance, it should not be used when there is no stagnation. Do not believe claims regarding its tonifying deficiency properties. The leaves resemble chives but are hollow. (The leaves are smooth, making it difficult for dew to stay, hence the term "Xie Lu" [Leek Dew].) The root resembles garlic. Use the white part.
