It is the same as *Hu* (Allium sativum var. nigrum). It has the effects of dispersing, unblocking orifices, and repelling foulness.
Pungent in flavor, hot in nature, and toxic. It opens the stomach and strengthens the spleen. Promotes digestion of grains. (Especially effective for meat accumulation.) Repels filth and drives away evil pathogens. Unblocks the five zang organs. Reaches all orifices. (Any substance with an extremely strong odor, whether foul or fragrant, can unblock orifices.) Removes cold stagnation. Resolves summerheat. Prevents epidemics. Reduces carbuncles and swellings. (Mashed and mixed with sesame oil for topical application.) Breaks up masses and accumulations. (Topical application of mashed garlic is also excellent.) Kills snake, insect, and gu poison. Treats unconsciousness due to heatstroke. (Mashed and mixed with earth slurry, taken warm.) Mashed and applied to the soles of the feet, it guides heat downward. Treats persistent epistaxis. Inserted into the anus, it unblocks the pylorus. Treats guan-ge syndrome (obstruction of both urination and defecation). Applied to the umbilicus, it reaches the lower jiao. Eliminates edema. Promotes urination and bowel movements. Sliced and used with moxa, it treats all kinds of carbuncles, ulcers, malignant sores, and swollen nodules. (Li Xun stated in his treatise on carbuncles and ulcers: For carbuncles and ulcers, moxibustion is superior to medication. This is because heat-toxin is trapped in the middle jiao, causing obstruction between upper and lower parts; the toxin must be vented out before it can resolve. At the initial stage, use a single-clove garlic, slice it, and apply moxibustion. Change every three moxa cones, with one hundred cones as a standard limit. However, moxibustion must never be applied above the head and neck, lest it draw qi upward and cause greater disaster. Shi Yuan reported cases of up to eight hundred moxa cones, using approximately one sieve of moxa. Initially, the necrotic tissue does not hurt; pain is only felt when the healthy tissue is reached. By night, the fire steams the back, creating hundreds of holes on the elevated areas, allowing the toxin to exit externally; otherwise, the toxin will force inward into the five zang organs, leading to critical danger.) Its nature is hot, and its odor is pungent. It generates phlegm and stirs fire. Scatters qi and consumes blood. Blurs vision, damages spirit, and harms vitality. (This applies to all five pungent vegetables, but garlic is particularly severe. The *Lankavatara Sutra* states: Cooked five pungents provoke lust, while raw ones increase anger. Buddhists prohibit them because they damage spiritual purity. Daoist alchemists classify small garlic, large garlic, Chinese chives, turnip greens, and coriander as the five pungents. Daoists classify Chinese chives, wild leek, garlic, turnip greens, and coriander as the five pungents. Buddhists classify large garlic, small garlic, asafoetida, winter onion, and mountain onion as the five pungents. Winter onion refers to *Conger japonicus*; mountain onion refers to *Allium victorialis*. Asafoetida is a vegetable from the Western Regions; some say it is equivalent to Chinese coriander, others say it is Ferula assa-foetida.) Persons who are deficient and have heat syndromes should absolutely avoid consuming it. Single-clove
