Commonly known as bee honey; those growing on rocks are called rock honey or stone honey. It tonifies the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), moistens dryness, and lubricates the intestines to relieve constipation.
It is brewed from the essence of flowers collected from a hundred species, combined with dew. Raw honey has a cool nature and can clear heat. Cooked honey has a warm nature and can tonify the Middle Jiao. Its sweetness and mildness allow it to detoxify.
Its softness and slipperiness allow it to moisten dryness. The sweet flavor relieves urgency, thus stopping various pains caused by sores and ulcers in the heart, abdomen, and muscles. The sweet flavor harmonizes the interior, thus regulating Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), unblocking the Three Jiao (Upper, Middle, and Lower Burners), calming the Five Zang Organs, and harmonizing various herbs, functioning similarly to Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice). It stops coughing and treats dysentery. (For detoxification and intestinal lubrication, it is most effective for treating dysentery when taken with ginger juice.) It brightens the eyes and enhances facial complexion. When crushed with Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xiebai) and applied topically, it treats burns and scalds. When boiled down into a gel, it relieves severe fecal impaction. (When inserted into the anus while hot, it is called "Honey Suppository" [Mi Jian Dao].) For those with deficiency-cold and loose stools due to Large Intestine deficiency, even cooked honey is contraindicated. Consuming sour honey causes mental restlessness. Eating it with green onions is harmful to humans. After consuming honey and water, one must not eat other foods immediately, or it may cause sudden death. Honey that is white like paste is of good quality. (Wang Ying stated: Honey's properties depend on the flower source. Honey from Fujian and Guangdong is hot; Sichuan honey is warm; Western honey is cool. Xuanzhou produces Coptidis Honey, which is slightly bitter and excellent for clearing eye heat. Xi Jing produces Pear Blossom Honey, which is white like fat.) Use silver or earthenware vessels. For every jin (approx. 500g) of honey, add four liang (approx. 200g) of water. Slowly boil over mulberry wood fire, skimming off the foam, until a drop forms a bead shape. Yellow beeswax is sweet, bland, and astringent, with a slight warmth. It stops pain and generates flesh. It treats dysentery. (Honey is soft, moist, and slippery, thus lubricating the gastrointestinal tract; beeswax is hard, firm, and astringent, thus stopping diarrhea and dysentery.) It heals fractures and injuries. (Both honey and beeswax are produced by bees. Honey is extremely sweet, while beeswax is extremely bland. Hence, people today say something is tasteless by comparing it to chewing wax.)
Exposure Beehive (Lufengfang) detoxifies and kills parasites.
It is sweet, neutral, and toxic. It treats convulsions and epilepsy. It treats deep-rooted bone abscesses (Fugu Yongju). The root of the disease lies in the Zang-Fu organs. (Burn together with Ophichtri Cutis (Snake Skin) to ash, and take with wine. Note: Fugu Yongju does not ulcerate initially; the pus adheres to the bone, hence the name. Those unaware mistake it for Zei Feng (Thief Wind). In Fugu Yongju, the painful area is hot, limbs alternate between hot and cold, urine is red, stool is constipated, and there is no sweat. Clearing heat and dispersing pathogens resolves it. In Zei Feng, the painful area is not hot, nor is there alternating fever/chills; the body feels cold, and relief comes only with heat application. It should be treated with wind-dispelling herbs.) Apply to Scrofula (Luoli) to dissipate nodules. (Roast, grind into powder, mix with pig lard, and apply topically.) Stops toothache caused by wind-worms. (Boil water for gargling. Li Shizhen said: This is a Yangming meridian herb, utilizing poison to attack poison, with the additional function of killing parasites.) Apply to pediatric double tongue (Chong She). (Burn to ash, mix with wine, and apply under the tongue several times a day.) Its mechanism is using poison to attack poison. It is contraindicated after abscesses have ulcerated. Use beehives found on open-air trees. (Wash and decoct for use; treat carbuncles and swellings by mixing with vinegar for topical application.)
