[Yellow Soybean]
Benefits the middle jiao and promotes bowel movement.
Sweet and warm in nature. Benefits the middle jiao, directs qi downward, promotes bowel movement, reduces water retention and swelling/toxins. Grind into powder, mix with cooked water, and apply topically to sores after smallpox resolution. (If smallpox toxins occur in critical areas, fearing sequelae, have the mother chew raw yellow soybeans thoroughly and apply a thick paste to the affected area, which will resolve them; if they appear elsewhere, treat separately.) Bean oil: pungent, sweet, hot. Slightly toxic. Apply for sores and scabies. Resolves hair issues.
[White Bean]
Also known as Fan Dou (Rice Bean). Tonifies and regulates the middle jiao.
Sweet and neutral in nature. Tonifies the five zang organs. (Sun Simiao said: It is the grain of the Kidney; suitable for consumption in kidney diseases.) Warms the intestines and stomach, regulates the middle jiao, assists the twelve meridians. Tofu: see category on fermentation/brewing. Leaves: boiled and eaten. Benefits the five zang organs, directs qi downward.
[Azuki Bean / Red Bean]
Promotes unblocking, moves water, disperses blood stasis.
Sweet, sour, and neutral in nature. Red in color. It is the grain of the Heart. Its nature descends and unblocks the Small Intestine. (The Heart and Small Intestine are interior-exteriorly related; it moves water. Boiled together with carp, it can reduce edema; making porridge with it is also excellent.) Disperses blood stasis, reduces swelling, expels pus, clears heat, and detoxifies. Treats diarrhea, dysentery, vomiting, and Hongjiaojiao (ancient term for beriberi/foot disease). (In the past, someone suffering from Hongjiaojiao used a bag filled with azuki beans, stepping on them morning and evening, and was cured.) Applied externally to all kinds of sores and carbuncles. (Mixed with egg white powder to bind the area; the nature is extremely sticky, difficult to remove when dry. Adding Pueraria lobata root powder prevents stickiness. Emperor Renzong of Song suffered from facial swelling. Daoist Zannin took forty-nine azuki beans, chanted over them, mixed them with other herbs, applied them, and he was cured. Eunuch Ren Chengliang witnessed this personally. Later, Ren himself suffered from a malignant sore. Fu Yong taught him a medicine, which cured him immediately. Upon inquiry, it was azuki bean. Ren then realized the Daoist's chanting was fake. Later, passing through Yuzhang, he saw a doctor treating a flank abscess very quickly. Ren asked: Is it perhaps azuki bean? The doctor startled and bowed, saying: I have saved more than thirty people with this; please do not reveal it again. For any ulceration nearly fatal, applying the powder works instantly.) Stops thirst, resolves alcohol toxicity, promotes lactation, expels the fetus. Most effective at seeping out fluids. Long-term use causes emaciation and heavy body sensation. (The "Ten Formulas" states: Dryness can remove dampness; examples include Bai Sang Pi [Morus Alba Cortex] and Chi Xiao Dou [Azuki Bean].) Use those that are tight, small, and dark red for medicinal purposes. Those that are slightly larger and bright red or pale red do not treat diseases. What is currently sold in shops as half-red and half-black per seed is Xiangsi Zi (Abrus precatorius). (Also known as Hong Dou [Red Bean], bitter and neutral in nature, toxic. Expels evil qi from the heart and abdomen; treats wind-phlegm, miasma malaria, insect/gu poison. Grind twenty-one seeds and take orally.)
