It is ox-hide gelatin. It tonifies Yin.
Sweet and neutral, it tonifies Yin. It treats various blood disorders and carbuncles/ulcers, moistens dryness, and unblocks the large intestine. (Li Shizhen said: Its nature and flavor are neutral and tonifying, suitable for individuals with deficiency-heat; Chen Zimingsaid: For tonifying deficiency, use ox-hide gelatin; for dispelling wind, use donkey-hide gelatin; *Experience Formulas* states: At the initial stage of carbuncles/ulcers, take four taels of Huangming Jiao dissolved in wine in one dose; after finishing the dose, the pathogenic toxin will not attack inwardly; Tang's formula adds four slices of Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scales) calcined to retain their properties; this formula is quite effective, far surpassing La Fan Wan.) The production must be refined. The gelatin sold in markets today is hard. If it is ox-hide gelatin, dissolve it in ginger juice, mix with powder of Arisaema Cum Bile (Nan Xing), apply it to the affected area, heat an object, and moxa/iron it over the application; this treats the initial stage of perianal abscesses. If it is water gelatin, dissolve it and apply it, and it will dissipate immediately.
Neutral and moistening.
Sweet and neutral. Clears the Lung, nourishes the Liver, tonifies the Kidney and supplements Yin, stops bleeding and removes stasis, eliminates wind and transforms phlegm, moistens dryness and calms wheezing, benefits the small and large intestines. It treats consumptive cough due to deficiency-labor, pulmonary萎 (Lung Wei) with expectoration of pus, hematemesis, epistaxis, bloody strangury, hemorrhoids with blood, and intestinal wind with dysentery. (For dysentery caused by summerheat injury and latent heat, it must be used; it is especially suitable for bloody dysentery during pregnancy.) Lower back soreness and bone pain, blood pain and blood exhaustion, irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, and fetal restlessness. (If there is vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, decoct it with wine.) And all kinds of wind diseases. (Meng Shen said: All gelatins can treat wind diseases, tonify deficiency, and stop diarrhea; among them, donkey-hide gelatin is best for treating wind; Zong said: Using donkey-hide to make gelatin takes advantage of its ability to disperse pathogens from the skin surface; using black hide takes advantage of its association with Water to control the principle that "extreme heat generates wind.") Carbuncles, ulcers, swelling, and toxins. (Shi Ying said: After pediatric convulsions/wind-stroke, if the pupil shape is abnormal, taking Ejiao with double the amount of Renshen (Ginseng Root) is best; Ejiao has divine efficacy, and Renshen tonifies Qi. Note: A Well is a subterranean flow of the Ji River; its nature tends downward. When used to stir turbid water, it becomes clear. Therefore, it treats blood stasis/turbidity and rebellious phlegm. Generally speaking, as a key herb for the Lung and Large Intestine, it tonifies Blood and Body Fluids.) It is contraindicated for weak stomach causing vomiting and spleen deficiency causing indigestion. Use black donkey hide, decocted with water from A Well. The best quality is black, lustrous, slightly greenish, melts easily when stored, clear, non-greasy, and odorless. Stir-fried with clam shell powder. (To transform phlegm.) Coated with cattail pollen. (To stop bleeding.) Dissolved in wine. Dissolved in water. Used together with child's urine. Beneficial when heated. Yam serves as an assistant. It fears Rhubarb. (For unstoppable menstruation, charred Ejiao powdered and taken with wine, 2 qian; for hematuria during pregnancy, yellow-cooked Ejiao powdered, taken before meals with gruel drink, 2 qian.)
