Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan)
Clears the fire pathogen in the Shaoyang blood level. Its nature is cold and its taste bitter, dispersing heat accumulation from stasis in the Ying (Nutritive) level. Aromatic and acrid, its red color enters the Heart and Liver meridians. It can treat conditions where pathogens remain in the channels. Its nature is penetrating and reaches directly to the Kidney. It can eliminate bone-steaming fever without sweating. (Mudanpi's acridity can disperse, bitterness can drain, coldness can clear. Red color enters the blood level for circulation. It has an aromatic and penetrating nature, entering the blood levels of the Liver, Gallbladder, Heart, Kidney, and Sanjiao. It cools the blood and disperses blood stasis. All conditions involving wind-heat or blood stasis in the blood level can use it. This is due to its cold and dispersing nature.)
Gansong (Nardostachys Rhizome)
Treats cold pain in the Stomach fu organ. Sweet and warm, it repels evil qi. Disperses stagnation in the Spleen. Aromatic and drying, it eliminates pathogens. (Gansong is sweet, warm, and aromatic, entering the Spleen and Stomach meridians to open stagnation. Although it lacks tonifying power, it has the function of awakening and promoting transportation. When added to Spleen-tonifying formulas, it is very effective. Regarding repelling foul odors, treating abdominal pain, and killing parasites, these are all uses of its sweet, warm, and aromatic properties. Contraindicated for those with Yin deficiency who should not use drying and dispersing agents.)
Shannai (Kaempferia Galanga Rhizome)
Its nature and taste are similar to the previous herb, but slightly more acrid. Its therapeutic effects are quite similar to Gansong, both belonging to the category of dispersion. It washes away pathogens and resolves turbidity, making hair lustrous and skin fragrant. (Shannai, also known as Shanla, is acrid and warm, with an aromatic and dispersing aroma. It warms the Spleen and Stomach, treats abdominal pain, and repels miasmic and foul odors. It is used in combination with various aromatic herbs. It is rarely used for dietary therapy or disease treatment.)
Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii)
It is the essence of aquatic plants. It possesses an aromatic qi and a drying substance. It treats obstruction and closure caused by wind-phlegm. Its taste contains acrid and bitter notes, and its nature is slightly warm. It opens the heart orifices to expel pathogens, relying on its disseminating and guiding action. It benefits the obscuration of clear yang qi, relying on it to enhance intelligence. (Shichangpu is acrid, bitter, and warm, aromatic and drying. It enters the Heart meridian, connects with spirit and enlightenment, repels malevolent spirits, clears phlegm, and opens orifices. Because it grows among water and stones, it can also disperse water pathogens. All conditions such as heart accumulations, fuliang [abdominal masses], and epilepsy can use it. Those produced on rocks, with roots one cun long and nine nodes, are superior. Large ones grown in mud are unsuitable for use.)
