Yi Zhi Ren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit)
Tonifies the Heart and Spleen. Warms Mingmen Fire to eliminate Yin-Cold. Astringes the Bladder to reduce urination and stops drooling. Flavor: Pungent, Bitter. Aroma: Fragrant. Nature: Hot. Secures the Kidney and nurtures Yuan Qi. Warms the Stomach to dispel Cold. Can calm vomiting and stop pain. Warms the Middle Jiao to promote appetite, promotes stagnation, opens up constraint, and resolves depression. (Yi Zhi Ren has a bitter and pungent flavor, is hot in nature and fragrant in aroma. It enters the Heart, Spleen, and Kidney meridians. It tonifies Fire to generate Earth [i.e., warms Kidney Yang to warm Spleen Earth]. It can grasp and regulate Qi moving up and down. Its ability to reduce urination and stop drooling relies mainly on its fragrant aroma, which specifically favors the Spleen meridian. Therefore, it can activate Spleen and Stomach functions, promote food intake, open up constraint, and disperse Cold pathogens. However, it is not suitable for those with Yin deficiency and internal heat.)
Bi Bo (Long Pepper)
Disperses deep-seated Cold in the Stomach Fu organ; cold stagnation is eliminated and vomiting dissipates. Treats floating Heat in the Yangming channel; cephalalgia due to wind heals spontaneously, and toothache is alleviated. Hiccups and borborygmus are treated because of its pungent-hot nature and ability to direct Qi downward. Acid regurgitation and phlegm obstruction are resolved because its fragrant aroma naturally unblocks the Middle Jiao. (Bi Bo is extremely pungent and hot, with a flavor similar to Piperis Nigris Fructus (Black Pepper). It enters the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians and is a herb for the Yangming channel. It warms the Middle and disperses Cold, breaks up stagnation, opens up constraint, directs Qi downward, and eliminates phlegm. It can also dissipate floating Heat in the Upper Jiao. For all conditions such as toothache, cephalalgia due to wind, and acid regurgitation belonging to Yangming Damp-Heat, this herb can be used for contrary treatment.)
Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizome)
Dispels Cold and stops pain in the heart and abdomen; its pungent-warm property is effective. Directs rebellious Qi downward and treats vomiting caused by clear saliva; it is particularly suitable for the Spleen and Stomach. (Liang Jiang is pungent and warm, entering the Spleen and Stomach meridians. It drives out Cold pathogens and stops abdominal pain. Although drying, it lacks an intensely aromatic quality. Its ability to calm vomiting and treat clear saliva can be fully summarized by the four characters "Warming the Spleen and warming the Stomach.")
She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit)
Assists Yang and warms the Lower Jiao; it possesses the efficacy of dispelling Cold-Dampness. Enters the Kidney and acts upon the Spleen, demonstrating the power of its pungent-bitter and warm nature. For conditions such as genital erosion and parasitic sores, decoction for washing is quite suitable. For various sores caused by Wind pathogen invasion, such as scabies and leprosy-like skin diseases, external application is effective. (She Chuang Zi is pungent, bitter, and warm, with slight toxicity. It enters the Kidney meridian, tonifies the Lower Yuan, dispels Cold-Dampness, warms the uterus, kills parasites, and treats scabies. It treats conditions such as impotence and dampness of the scrotum. Ancient practitioners often used it internally, claiming great efficacy. Nowadays, it is mostly used in external treatments, either as a decoction for fumigation and washing or as a powder mixed for topical application. This reflects differences in popular usage.)
