Mu Zei Cao (Equiseti Herba)
Calms the Liver and disperses Lung Qi. Resolves the muscle layer, induces sweating to scatter Wind pathogens. Bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Eliminates corneas and spots, promotes blood circulation to remove stasis. (Mu Zei Cao: This herb has a hollow stem with nodes, capable of polishing wood; thus it enters the Liver channel to grind down accumulations and disperse pathogens. Due to its hollow structure and white color, it also enters the Lung channel, resolving the muscle layer and inducing sweating. When charred, it treats various bleeding disorders, whether caused by Wind disturbing the blood or Liver blood stasis, such as metrorrhagia, hemorrhoids, and dysentery due to Wind pathogens, as recorded in ancient formulas. Mu Zei is a specific medicine for the Liver; since the Liver stores blood, it enters the Blood level. In summary, it is suitable for cases where the Liver has Wind pathogens and stasis, but should be contraindicated in cases of Blood deficiency.)
Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma - *Note: Text refers to "Cao" but context implies Bi Xie/Dioscorea* )
Bitter and cold, able to drain dampness and dispel Wind. Enters the Kidney and Liver channels. Processed by steaming with wine and mixing with honey. Suitable for Bi syndrome and Wei syndrome. (This herb enters the Liver and Kidney channels to dispel Wind and drain dampness, which is its primary function. Regarding tonification claims, one must select its branches and leaves, wash them clean, mix thoroughly with honey and wine, and steam and sun-dry nine times. Then the bitter, cold, turbid, and foul nature are eliminated, and the clear, fragrant, sweet, and beautiful flavor emerges. For conditions such as Wei syndrome, Bi syndrome, and paralysis caused by internal invasion of Wind-Damp due to Liver-Kidney deficiency, all can be treated with this. This herb has a fishy odor, so it specifically enters the Liver channel; since the Liver stores blood, it enters the Blood level. The statement that it enters the Kidney channel is because Yi and Gui share the same source (Liver and Kidney share the same origin). Raw material is bitter and cold, able to scatter Wind pathogens, damp-heat in the blood; once processed, it turns sweet and warm, possessing the merit of tonifying the Liver and Kidney amidst dispelling Wind and driving out Dampness.)
Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba)
Obtains the Qi of Shaoyang in early spring. Bitter and fragrant in taste. Travels through the meridians of the Liver and Gallbladder Blood level. The Qi ascends and disperses; Pungency resolves the exterior. Suitable for clearing stagnant heat in the Ying (Nutritive) level. Coldness eliminates bone-steaming fever. Can treat Shizhu (corpse infection), Ganji (infant malnutrition), and Lao disease (consumption). (Qing Hao inherits the Qi of spring growth; its aroma is fragrant, its taste bitter, and its nature cold, thus it can vent Heat pathogens from the Liver-Gallbladder Blood level, expelling them from the exterior. Its seeds have similar efficacy and properties but lack the ability to resolve the exterior, instead having moistening and descending functions. As for treating bone-steaming, Shizhu, insect-related Ganji, etc., these are generally caused by stagnant Heat in the Blood level. Qing Hao is more bitter than pungent; although cold, it does not damage the Spleen and Stomach due to its aromatic quality. Thus, it enters the Liver-Gallbladder Blood level, searching for Wind and driving out Heat. Once pathogens are removed, blood no longer stagnates, so it can also treat blood stasis and congestion.)
