Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori)
It can drain excess fire from the Lung. It descends rebellious Qi and eliminates phlegm, curing coughs. Its nature is sweet, cold, and non-toxic. It disperses pathogenic factors and promotes urination to relieve distension due to water retention. The fruit nourishes blood and generates fluids. Its texture is sweet and moist. The branch dispels wind and activates collaterals. Its taste is bitter and its nature is neutral. (The Cortex Mori should be scraped of the rough bark near the soil, using only the pure white part. It is sweet, cold, slightly bitter, and slightly pungent. Being white and cold in nature, it enters the Lung meridian and excels at descending. It benefits the Large and Small Intestines, thus draining fire from the Lung, descending Qi, and moving water. In this way, diseases such as edema, phlegm-cough, and wind-pathogens can all be cured.)
The fruit is named Sangshen (Mulberry Fruit), which is formed from the essence of the Mulberry tree. It tastes sweet and appears red; when ripe, it turns purple-black. It enters the Blood level of the Liver meridian, nourishing blood and tonifying the Liver. When blood flows freely, wind dissipates. The Mulberry branch can reach the four limbs, circulate through meridians, lubricate joints, and assist medicinal power with its bitter and neutral nature, making it an excellent drug for dispelling wind.
Drawing upon the essence of the Ji Star (Ji Xing). It can search out wind pathogens in the Liver collaterals. Endowed with the authority of the Green Emperor (Qingdi, deity of Wood/East). It excels at venting Qi-fire of the Shaoyang. Symptoms such as ocular discharge, tearing, and photophobia are alleviated by its sweet and cold nature. Various conditions like Dou Feng (wind affecting the eyes) and vertigo are relieved by its dispersing and promoting properties. (Mulberry leaves that have been exposed to frost are superior. All leaves have a dispersing quality; their veins resemble networks, thus allowing them to enter collaterals, disperse wind, and connect the Liver and Lung. The Mulberry tree is the spirit of the Ji Star, which favors wind; therefore, it is particularly an important herb for entering the Liver and searching out wind. The Liver and Gallbladder are connected, so it can also vent fire from the Qi level of the Shaoyang. Any eye diseases or head wind conditions caused by wind-heat can utilize this herb.)
Nvzhenzi (Fructus Ligustri Lucidi)
Endowed with the nature of a sturdy trunk that does not wither. Possessing the efficacy of being sweet, cool, pure, and tranquil. Entering the Kidney to benefit Yin, restoring vision obscured by dimness. Reaching the Lower Jiao to retreat heat, causing white hair to turn black again. (Nvzhenzi is the fruit of the Privet tree (Ligustrum lucidum). It is purple-black in color, with a sweet, bitter, and neutral taste. This tree does not shed its leaves in winter, inheriting the essence of Shaoyin (Kidney). Thus, it can enter the Kidney to benefit Yin. When Water is sufficient, vision becomes clear and heat recedes. In this manner, the Five Zang organs can be harmonized, and Spirit can be nourished. Therefore, it is listed as a Superior Grade herb in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*.)
