Hai Gou Shen (Sea Dog Kidney)
Tonifies the kidney and strengthens primal yang. Salty in flavor, hot in nature. Astringes essence and treats corpse-tu (a wasting disease attributed to spirits). Dispels malevolent influences and eliminates evil pathogens. (Hai Gou Shen is also known as Tanwa Qi. It originates from the sea and is the external kidney of a beast. Salty in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Kidney Meridian. It can strengthen primal yang and tonify marrow and essence. When primal yang is strong, yin pathogens are eliminated; thus, it treats corpse-tu and dispels ghostly evils. It can also treat diseases such as cold hernia and mass formations.)
Bai Ma Ni (White Horse Urine)
Pungent in flavor, cold in nature, and toxic. Dissolves masses and parasites and kills insects. (Previous authorities all stated that Bai Ma Ni can dissolve masses, kill parasites, and treat conditions such as regurgitation, dysphagia, and abdominal pain. It can be used for any condition involving parasites. It can also treat heat syndromes and wasting-thirst. This is due to its salty-cold descending property, which guides heat downward. Its insect-killing effect is likely due to its pungency and toxicity.)
Zhu Ji Sui (Pig Spinal Cord)
Sweet and salty in flavor. Cold and greasy in texture. Tonifies deficiency-wasting spinal pain. Eliminates vexatious steaming from bone marrow. Combined with Heart Blood and Cinnabar, it enters the Heart to eliminate fright and epilepsy. Pig Lung combined with Coix Seed treats flaccidity syndrome to protect Lung Metal. The stomach [part] can benefit the spleen. The kidney part returns to the kidney. Pig Gallbladder has the function of guiding bowel movements. Pig Trotters have the use of promoting lactation. Skin can clear the upper jiao; Zhu Fu Tang is taken to treat throat conditions. Intestines can moisten the bowels; Zang Lian Wan uses them as a guide. (Zhu Ji Sui is sweet, salty, and cold in nature. It unites the Du Meridian and tonifies marrow and essence. Any condition such as yin-deficiency bone-steaming, five-center night fever, spinal pain, or spinal protrusion can be treated with it. This follows the principle of "using shape to supplement shape." ○ Heart Blood: In medicines treating fright, epilepsy, mania, and madness, it is used as a guide to enter the Heart. The Heart is the sovereign organ and stores the spirit; thus, it can calm the spirit and dispel ghosts. The Heart governs blood and can also cool blood-heat. It aids in erupting smallpox, which is also due to its salty-cold power. ○ Lung: Sweet and cold, enters the Lung. Boiled with Bletilla, it tonifies lung deficiency. Dipped in Coix Seed, it treats lung flaccidity. This also borrows its guiding power. ○ Stomach: Sweet and warm, belongs to Earth. It can nourish the stomach, strengthen the spleen, harmonize the middle, and promote appetite. Ancient formulas often use it. ○ Kidney: Salty and cold, non-toxic. Although there is a saying that it enters the kidney to treat lower back pain, it merely serves as an adjuvant to guide other herbs. ○ Pig Gallbladder: Zhang Zhongjing treated Yin-excess repelling Yang syndromes. Fearing that medicinal decoctions would be rejected and not absorbed, he added this to Bai Tong Tang. He utilized its bitter-cold, lubricating nature. As a sentient blood-related substance, it descends deficient yang and moistens body fluids, so that hot medicines do not damage the upper jiao. Regarding guiding bowel movements, applying to carbuncles, killing insects, and treating childhood malnutrition, all these utilize the meaning of bitter-cold lubrication. ○ Pig Trotters: Sweet, salty, and cold. Enters the Stomach Meridian. Good at descending. As a blood-related substance, once ingested into the stomach, it naturally dissolves and blends with blood, permeating meridians and collaterals; thus, it has the merit of promoting milk secretion. ○ Pig Skin: Refers to the black skin scraped off pigs. Salty and cold, enters the Lung. Zhang Zhongjing treated Shaoyin disease with diarrhea and sore throat, caused by insufficient Kidney water and deficient fire insulting Metal. ○ Pig Intestines: Sweet and cold. Enters the intestines to moisten dryness. Any condition such as intestinal wind, visceral toxin, hemorrhoids, and fistulas can use it as a guide. For the above various parts, if used in medicine, they should preferably come from intact male pigs (sound 'jia') or castrated pigs (sound 'wen').)
