Ren Po (Human Soul/Corporeal Soul) primarily functions to calm the heart and spirit, stabilize the corporeal soul, and alleviate fright and terror. It is indicated for mania and epilepsy. The method of administration is to grind it into water and ingest orally (cited from *Bencao Gangmu*).
[Origin] (Li Shizhen stated) Humans are formed by the combination of Yin and Yang Qi. When Hun (Ethereal Soul) and Po (Corporeal Soul) gather, there is life; when they scatter, there is death. After death, the Hun ascends to heaven, and the Po enters the earth. The Po belongs to Yin; its essence sinks into the earth and transforms into this substance. This is similar to stars falling and turning into stones, or a tiger dying with its gaze falling to the ground and transforming into white stone, or human blood entering the earth and transforming into phosphorescent fire or jade-like substances.
[Substance] This material is found at the site where a person has been hanged. There is an object resembling bran or charcoal beneath the body. It should be excavated and collected immediately; if delayed, it will sink deeper into the ground.
[Explanation] If not excavated, there will inevitably be the disaster of repeated hanging. Although it may not necessarily be used as medicine, it is advisable to excavate it quickly to resolve the misfortune early.
Ren Gu (Human Bone) primarily functions to treat bone diseases and set fractures. For sores and ulcers, the ash from burned bones is taken (cited from *Bencao Shiyi*).
[Name] (Li Shizhen stated) Xu Shen said that "bone" is the kernel of flesh. (*Ling Shu Jing* states) the Kidney governs the bones, and the chapter *Gu Du Pian* discusses the size, length, width, and narrowness of bones in great detail.
[Treatment] (*Yi Lin Ji Yao Fang*) Treats punishment by beating. Burn human bone, grind into fine powder, and take three qian with wine on an empty stomach. After receiving beatings, there will be no swelling or ulceration. Long-term use thickens the skin. ○ (*Shou Yu Shen Fang*) Treats malignant sores. Crush burned human bone, grind into powder, and apply externally to the lesion.
[Combined Treatment] (*Yi Lin Ji Yao Fang*) Treats fractures. Use one liang of burned child's bone, two qian of Ru Xiang (Frankincense), and one square piece of Xi Hong Juan (Joyful Red Silk). Burn them to ash, grind into powder, and mix with hot wine for oral administration. First, fix the injured area with a slice of tung wood; immediate effect is expected. ○ (*Fu Shou Jing Fang*) Treats traumatic injuries. Use dead child's bone, processed and mixed with fried Xiang Gui Gua Zi Ren (Fennel Seed Kernel), ground into powder, and taken with good wine. Pain relief is extremely rapid.
[Contraindications] (Li Shizhen stated) Ancient people considered burying exposed bones as an act of benevolence, often receiving heavenly rewards. However, medical practitioners driven by profit collect human bones for medicinal use. Is this truly the way of benevolent medicine? Moreover, dogs do not eat dog bones; how can humans eat human bones? Only the biological son of a deceased father can pierce his finger and let blood drip onto the father's white bones, causing the blood to penetrate. (According to *Youyang Zazu*, a person in Jingzhou suffered a leg injury. Zhang Qizheng gave him medicinal wine, cut open the flesh, removed a piece of bone, applied ointment, and he healed. Two years later, pain recurred. Zhang said the removed bone retained coldness. Upon searching, the bone was still under the bed. It was washed with hot water, wrapped in cotton, and stored, after which the pain ceased. The resonance of Qi is so miraculous; who says dry bones have no consciousness? Benevolent people should understand this.)
