Ge Shang Ting Chang (Mylabris cichorii) treats Gu poison (parasitic disease), Gui Zhu (a highly contagious disease resembling tuberculosis or mental disorders), breaks down Lin accumulation and masses (accumulation of pathological products), and induces abortion. (Recorded by famous physicians) [Origin] Tao Hongjing said: Catch it when the kudzu flowers bloom. Its body is black and its head is red, resembling a person wearing black clothes and a red cap, hence the name "Ting Chang" (Pavilion Chief). This insect undergoes five transformations in one year, all similar. In March, it is on the Genkwa flower, called Yuan Qing; in April and May, on the Vaccaria seeds, called Wang Bu Liu Xing Chong; in June and July, on the Kudzu flower, called Ge Shang Ting Chang; in August, on the bean flower, called Ban Mao; in September and October, preparing to hibernate underground, called Di Dan. This is a false Di Dan, but its therapeutic effects are still the same. [Tang Ben Cao Note] states: Upon checking the Materia Medica and ancient prescriptions, there is no record of using Wang Bu Liu Xing Chong. If so, do these four insects stay in one place? Currently, Di Dan comes from Bin Zhou, Yuan Qing from Ning Zhou, Ting Chang from Yong Zhou, and Ban Mao is found everywhere. These four insects come from four places; can this insect travel through four provinces in one year? Moreover, Yuan Qing and Ban Mao are similar in shape, while Ting Chang and Di Dan look very different. The Di Dan from Bin Zhou is collected from grass and vegetables from March to October, not taken from the ground. What Tao Hongjing said may confuse the differentiation of syndromes. [Shaoxing Revision] states: Ge Shang Ting Chang belongs to the category of Ban Mao and Yuan Qing, but is a distinct species. Verifying its blood-breaking nature, it is not far off. Generally, it is used to break up accumulated blood and hard masses. The *Shennong Ben Cao Jing* states: Pungent, slightly warm, toxic. This is correct. The note mentions one insect with five transformations; claiming it travels through four provinces in a year lacks evidence. It is mostly produced in Shandong prefectures. [Growth] No fixed time. [Harvest] Collected in June and July. [Storage] Sun-dried. [Usage] Those with black bodies and red heads are superior. [Color] Black. [Flavor] Pungent. [Nature] Slightly warm, dispersing. [Qi and Flavor] Qi is stronger than flavor, belonging to Yang. [Odor] Fishy. [Indications] Lin syndrome (dysuria). Must be placed on a roof beam for one night before use. [Treatment] *Tu Jing* says: After obtaining, break the abdomen. Inside are white seeds like millet grains. Dry them in the shade on a white board. For chronic Lin syndrome, take 3 or 2 pills. When taking, put water in a small cup, add the pill, grind with fingernails until it flattens and floats on the water surface. Let the patient drink it, ensuring it does not touch the teeth. Though small, the medicine reaches the lower Jiao where the Lin syndrome is located. Shortly after, the medicine will cause a sensation of heat/discomfort. Drinking dry wheat bran juice or plain water can stop the medicinal force. Elderly and children should take one-third dose. It will expel substances resembling pus and blood, or stones like a finger, either green or yellow. Both men and women will be cured. [Contraindications] Do not take during pregnancy.
