Non-toxic: Head, fat, intestine, white chicken manure (Ji Shi Bai), wing feathers (He Yu), and egg.
Red Rooster (Dan Xiong Ji) (from *Shennong Bencao Jing*): Mainly treats women's metrorrhagia and leukorrhea (Beng Zhong Lou Xia, Chi Bai Wo), tonifies deficiency, warms the middle jiao (Zhong Jiao), stops bleeding, calms the spirit (Tong Shen), detoxifies, and wards off inauspicious influences. ○ The head mainly treats ghostly pathogenic factors (Sha Gui).
○
Fat (Zhi) mainly treats deafness.
○
Intestine mainly treats enuresis (Yi Niao).
○
Inner yellow skin (Li Huang Pi) mainly treats diarrhea and dysentery.
○
White chicken manure (Ji Shi Bai) mainly treats diabetes mellitus (Xiao Ke) and chills and fever caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage).
○
Wing feathers (He Yu) mainly treat lower body bleeding and amenorrhea (Bi).
○
White insectoid fat of chicken (Ji Bai Du Fei Zhi) (The above red text is from *Shennong Bencao Jing*; the following black text is recorded by later famous physicians): Mainly treats chronic wounds resulting from old injuries.
[Origin] [Recorded in *Tu Jing*]: *Bencao Jing* states that white insectoid fat of chicken originates from Pyeongsan, Joseon (Korea). Tao Hongjing said: "Joseon should not always be the origin of chickens, and 'white insectoid' is unknown; it is likely another substance." The Kaibao annotation calls it "chicken" for medicinal use, presumably considering those from Joseon to be superior. Nowadays, chickens are raised everywhere, and it is not heard that they all come from Joseon. [Recorded in *Yan Yi*]: Red rooster refers to what is now called red chicken, described by feather color. The Xun trigram symbolizes chicken and wind. Chickens crow at the fifth watch because the sun is approaching, and the qi of the Xun position moves them to crow. People whose bodies harbor wind pathogens should not consume it. Neither the classics nor annotations mention that chicken causes wind disease; however, people with existing wind conditions invariably flare up after eating it, verifying its association with the Xun trigram. Those who eat chicken should exercise caution. ○ Note: Red rooster comes from *Shennong Bencao Jing*, while black rooster, white rooster, yellow hen, and black hen were added by later famous physicians. Although chicken colors vary, their bodily functions are largely similar, differing only in sex and eggs. Thus, the *Shu Ben* states: For egg yolk and albumen, use the gallbladder, heart, liver, intestine, fat, and feces of a yellow hen; for black rooster, use the head; for black hen, use the wing feathers. This seems more detailed. Originally, the text on red rooster was appended under various chicken entries based on categories. Zhang Shi inherited this, causing confusion among users. Now, the red-texted Shennong material is collected under Red Rooster, and the therapeutic functions of other chickens by category are listed in black text below. Eggs remain as a separate entry. In this way, ancient and modern texts will not be confused, and usage will have clear attribution.
[Seasonality] [Growth]: No fixed season. [Harvest]: No fixed season.
[Usage]: Meat, fat, intestine, head (best from the east gate), white chicken manure, wing feathers, inner yellow skin.
[Properties] Color: Red. Taste: Sweet. Nature: Slightly warm, mild action. Qi/Flavor: Qi is stronger than flavor; belongs to Yin within Yang. Odor: Fishy.
[Therapeutic Actions] [Treatment] [Su Wen states]: Ji Shi Li (Chicken Manure Wine) treats abdominal fullness where one cannot eat dinner if lunch was eaten, known as Gu Zhang (Drum Distension). [Tu Jing states]: White chicken manure powder, one cun-bi (square-inch measure), mixed with six he of water and taken warm, treats muscle spasms moving into the abdomen. [Ri Hua Zi states]: Chicken crown blood treats vitiligo. ○ Chicken manure treats Bai Hu Feng (White Tiger Wind) and is applied externally for wind pain. ○ Chicken liver is included in kidney-tonifying formulas. ○ Inner yellow skin stops seminal emission, hematuria, metrorrhagia with leukorrhea, intestinal wind, and diarrhea/dysentery. [Meng Shen says]: For those suffering from Bai Hu gout, spreading rice on the affected area for chickens to eat is effective. Also, applying hot chicken manure topically is beneficial. [Bie Lu states]: Chicken crown blood treats insects entering the ear that cannot exit; dripping it into the ear expels them. It can also be applied externally for centipede and spider venom. It treats sudden fright in children, where they seem to have pain but do not know the condition; applying a small amount to the child's mouth cures it. It is also applied externally for horse bites; if toxic and painful, it is effective. Use female horse blood for male horse bites, and male horse blood for female horse bites. Both treat death by hanging, calming the spirit and allowing slow untying. Do not cut the rope immediately. If warmth remains below the heart, drip blood into the mouth for immediate revival. Use female blood for men, male blood for women. It also rescues sudden death, whether due to prior illness or sudden cessation during sleep, all caused by evil qi intrusion. Apply blood to the face, reapply when dry, and draw a circle of ash around the deceased. It also treats sudden impetigo with excessive exudate originating from the heart; if untreated early, it spreads to the whole body and kills, but external application cures it. ○ White chicken manure applied externally treats scorpion bites effectively. Burned to ash and taken with water (one cun-bi), it treats food/drug poisoning causing madness, chest oppression, nausea without vomiting, and constipation without defecation. It also treats engorged breasts (Du Ru), cracked nipples, and carbuncles/swellings.
[Combined Therapies] Burned white chicken manure taken with rice decoction treats infantile convulsive crying. ○ Dry white chicken manure powder taken with hot wine (one qian-bi) treats liver wind deficiency causing spasms moving into the abdomen. ○ A date-sized piece of white chicken manure taken with half a cup of wine treats death by hanging; pouring into mouth/nose restores life immediately. ○ One sheng of white chicken manure, fried until yellow and extremely hot, mixed with two sheng of wine, strained and drunk, treats wind-cold spasm with locked jaw and unconsciousness. ○ White chicken manure burned to ash, wrapped in silk, bitten against unbearable toothache, provides immediate relief. ○ One sheng of white chicken manure mixed with five sheng of soybeans, fried until color changes, poured with hot wine, simmered slightly to extract bean flavor, drunk according to tolerance, covered to induce sweating, avoiding wind, treats wind-stroke due to sores, causing opisthotonos, locked jaw, and limb rigidity. ○ Seven pieces of chicken manure boiled in two sheng of water to yield five he, used to cook rice porridge, treats retained dead fetus in the abdomen. ○ White chicken manure dried in the sun until half-dry, fried dry, powdered, and taken with fermented grain drink (one cun-bi) treats stone strangury (Shi Lin). ○ Chicken manure burned to ash, taken with wine on an empty stomach (one cun-bi) treats postpartum urinary incontinence.
[Contraindications] Eating chickens with five colors causes madness. ○ Eating chickens whose claws do not extend after death harms humans. Children under five years old who have not weaned should not be given chicken meat.
[Dietary Taboos] Consuming chicken and rabbit together causes diarrhea and dysentery. ○ Consuming chicken meat with fish juice causes Xin Jia (heart mass/tumor).
