Taiyang Earth (from *Bencao Gangmu*) is indicated for infantile asthma. When earth-moving activities violate taboos, one should consult the Nine Palaces to determine the palace where Taiyang resides, take the earth from that location, decoct it in water, and drink it; the asthma will subside immediately (*Yixue Zhengzhuan*).
Qianbu Feng Earth is indicated for early-stage perianal abscesses (bi du). Grind fresh ginger with vinegar into a paste and apply topically (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Origin] (Li Shizhen states) This refers to elevated soil on pathways walked by people, accumulated from shoes of passersby. Folklore suggests that households possessing this soil are auspicious.
Earth from pyre sites is indicated for malignant malaria. Take black-tinged earth, crush it together with scallions, form pills, and insert into the ear, or apply to the arm; symptoms cease immediately. For males, use the left ear; for females, the right ear (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Treatment] (*Bencao Shiyi* states) Placing cremated human ashes in a pillow or shoe sole can alleviate nightmares. (He’s Formula) For shijue (corpse-like coma) or sudden death with loss of consciousness, grind 2–3 qian of earth from pyre sites, mix with decoction, and administer orally to restore life; if unavailable, Zaoxin Tu (Furnace Heart Earth) may be substituted. (*Ji Jian Fang*) For infantile nocturnal crying, place earth from pyre sites near the infant’s pillow. (*Ji Yuan Fang*)
Non-toxic. Original annotation: Qiang Zhuan Wan was revised to Qianglang Zhuan Wan in *Bencao Gangmu*.
Qianglang Zhuan Wan (Dung Beetle Pills) is indicated for shanghan (cold damage), shiqi (epidemic qi), huangdan (jaundice), fanre (restless heat), and huoluan (cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea). Administer the juice obtained by leaching the pills with hot water (*Bencao Shiyi*). [Name] Tuxiao. [Origin] Chen Cangqi records it as dark green-black. [Leaf/Taste] Salty and bitter. [Nature] Greatly cold. [Treatment] (Chen Cangqi’s Formula) Calcine until carbonized, administer with wine to treat neck goiter, and apply topically to all sores.
Luosi Ni (Snail Mud) is indicated for regurgitation and vomiting. Soak one dou of snails in water, extract the mud, dry it, and take 1 qian each time, mixed with strong liquor (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Nature] Cool.
Baishan Ni (White Eel Mud) is indicated for huo dai chuang (fire belt sores). Wash white eels to collect the mud, dry it, stir-fry, and powder it; mix with sesame oil for topical application (*Bencao Gangmu*).
Quan Niao Ni (Dog Urine Mud) is indicated for retained fetus due to shanghan during pregnancy. Apply to the abdomen; replace when dry (*Bencao Gangmu*).
Niao Keng Ni (Urine Pit Mud) is indicated for bites from bees, scorpions, and other insects. Apply topically (*Bencao Gangmu*).
Fen Keng Di Ni (Bottom Mud of Dung Pit) is indicated for fabei (back carbuncles) and various malignant sores. Dry in shade, powder, and apply with fresh water; pain stops immediately (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Combined Treatment] (*Shengji Zonglu* states) For ding zhong (carbuncles/furuncles), mix equal parts of bottom dung pit earth, chan tui (cicada slough), and quan xie (scorpion); crush and form cakes the size of a coin. Fry in boiling sesame oil, take the warm liquid orally, and apply the dregs around the sore to expel the toxin.
