Mud under the eaves (soil collected from beneath roof eaves where rainwater drips) is indicated for various toxic conditions such as pig bites, bee stings, ant bites, and snakebites; it can be applied topically. Additionally, it may be mixed with sheep fat and applied to swellings, carbuncles, and erysipelas (*Honglou Gangmu*). [Treatment] (*Zhouhou Fang*) treats scorpion stings: Scorpions are divided into male and female. A male scorpion sting causes pain localized in one area; seal the area with mud from the bottom of a well, changing it when dry. A female scorpion sting causes pain that radiates throughout the body; seal the area with mud from under roof tiles. If there is no rainwater, draw fresh water from the roof to collect the dripping mud.
Field mud (soil from agricultural fields) is indicated for leeches entering the human ear. Place a basin of this mud beside the ear; the scent will cause the leech to exit spontaneously. If a person accidentally swallows a leech, mix one or two *sheng* of field mud with wine and ingest it; it should be expelled via defecation (*Honglou Gangmu*).
Non-toxic.
Wudi mud (a mineral substance, also known as *Haiercha* / catechu) clears heat from the upper jiao, transforms phlegm, generates fluids, and when applied to metallic wounds and all types of sores, promotes tissue regeneration, relieves pain, stops bleeding, and dries dampness (*Honglou Gangmu*). [Names] Wudie mud. Haiercha (Catechu). (Li Shizhen stated that "Wudi" or "Wuding" are transliterations from foreign languages without standard characters.) [Origin] Produced in southern regions including Java and Siam. [Quality] Small pieces that are moist and lustrous are superior; large pieces that are scorched and dry are inferior. [Color] Purple-black. [Taste] Bitter and astringent. [Nature] Neutral. [Preparation] Currently manufactured in Yunnan, Laos, and Muyunchang. It is said that fine tea powder is packed tightly into bamboo tubes, both ends sealed, and buried in muddy ditches for a long period. It is then taken out, pounded, juiced, and boiled into solid form. [Treatment] (*Bencao Quandu Fang*) For rhinorrhea (nasal discharge), insufflate Haiercha powder into the nose for good effect. [Combined Treatments] (*Jide Tang Fang*) For gangrenous stomatitis (fouling mouth), mix equal parts of Haiercha, Realgar (Xionghuang), and Fritillaria (Beimu) into powder. Rinse the mouth thoroughly with rice wash water before applying topically for efficacy. ○ Another prescription for gangrenous stomatitis and oral ulcers: Mix equal parts of Haiercha and Borax (Pengsha) into powder and apply topically. ○ (*Waike Fang*) For chancres and yin sores, use Haiercha powder. Wash clean with rice wash water before applying for miraculous effect; Hsculone (Huhuanglian) may be added in equal proportions. ○ (*Zanqi Fang*) One qian of Haiercha, one fen of Pearl (Zhenzhu), and half a fen of Borneol (Pian Nao) are ground into powder and applied. ○ (*Tang Shi Fang*) One qian of Haiercha, one fen of Calomel (Qingfen), and one fen of Borneol (Pian Nao) are ground into powder and applied. ○ (*Sun Shi Jixiao Fang*) For painful swelling of sores and hemorrhoids, mix Haiercha and Musk (Shexiang) into powder, blend with saliva, and apply. ○ (*Dong Bing Fang*) For rectal prolapse with qi-heat, mix two fen of Haiercha, five fen of Bear Gallbladder (Xiongdan), and one fen of Borneol (Pian Nao) into powder. Apply with human milk to the anus; the cooling fluid flows down, causing the prolapsed rectum to retract. This also treats hemorrhoids.
