Tuji (unfired brick earth) primarily treats *biejia* (abdominal mass resembling a turtle shape) in women and various sores on the head (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Name] Meizhe. [Origin] (Li Shizhen states) This is the consolidated earth slag flowing from the kiln used for firing bricks and tiles. [Quality] Light and porous. [Color] Ochre red. [Treatment] (Li Shizhen's formula) For phlegm nodules (subcutaneous lumps) arising in people, large as a finger and presenting with redness and swelling, grind into powder, mix with rapeseed oil, and apply topically; the swelling will subside. If pus forms, apply a plaster. [Combined Treatment] (Lu's Jide Tang Formula) Treats *baitu* (scalp tinea capitis with hair loss). Take four taels of red Tuji fired inside a kiln, one tael of Baicaoshuang (soot), one tael of Xionghuang (realgar), six qian of Danfan (alum), three qian of Yupi (elm bark), and one qian of Qingfen (calomel). Grind into powder, mix with pig bile, and apply after shaving the head. It is a miraculous formula with 100% efficacy.
Gangguo (crucible) treats *pianzhui shanqi* (hernia characterized by unilateral testicular swelling and pain). Grind into powder, mix with wine, and take two qian (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Name] Xiaojinyin Guo (Gold and Silver Melting Pot). [Origin] (Li Shizhen states) People in Wu collect fragments of porcelain, pound them into powder using a mortar, sieve and clarify to obtain the fine powder, called Zifen. Mixed with glue and water to form pots used for smelting gold and silver. [Combined Treatment] (Li Shizhen's formula) Treats Lianmeichuang (eyebrow sores) and burns from scalding or fire. Grind into powder, add a small amount of Qingfen, and apply to the affected area to promote healing of necrotic flesh.
Shaguo (clay pot) treats the resolution of accumulations and yellow edema. Use an aged clay pot, grind into powder, process via water flotation (water flying method), form into pills. Take five qian per dose, delivered with wine (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Origin] (Li Shizhen states) Made by mixing sandy soil and mud and firing it.
Yanjiao (soot from cooking fires) treats head sores, *baitu*, scabies, and wind xuan (lichenification) causing itching, pain, and weeping. Take the black soil from the bank of a cowhide-smoking stove, grind into powder, mix with sesame oil for topical application, or add a small amount of Qingfen (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Origin] (Li Shizhen states) This is the black soil found on stoves used for smoking cowhides and on kilns for firing tiles. [Combined Treatment] (Jide Tang Formula) Treats Niupixuexuan (cowhide blood xuan). Use three qian of Yanjiao, three qian of Hanshuishi (calcium carbonate), two qian of Baijian (white alum), and one qian five fen of Huajiao (Sichuan peppercorn). Grind into powder, mix with rendered pork fat, and apply. ○ (According to *Shengji Lu*) To treat Xiaokeyin yin (excessive thirst due to diabetes mellitus), take half a jin of black coal from the flue of a tile kiln, which is dry like iron feces. Grind into powder, add four liang of fresh ginger, pound together, place in a silk bag, soak in five sheng of water to extract the juice. Drink five he per dose. ○ (According to Chen Cangqi) To treat retained placenta (failure of the afterbirth to be expelled), take a pinch (three fingers' width) of black soil from behind the stove flue, taken at dawn (wugeng time) with wine.
