Spring water from mountain rocks: Mainly treats cholera (acute gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhea) causing restlessness, vomiting, abdominal emptiness, and muscle spasms (charley horse). To prevent the medicinal force from entering the abdomen and causing excessive emptiness, one should drink more; this method is called "washing the intestines." Do not let the abdomen remain empty; if it feels empty, take more. People are generally afraid of this method, but attempts have proven effective. However, for those with cold bodies and weak strength, care must be taken to avoid causing coldness in the zang-organs; dosage should be adjusted according to individual circumstances. (From *Bencao Shiyi*) [Name] (*Erya* states): Water gushing straight up is called Kanquan (Step Spring); hanging down is called Woquan (Pouring Spring); flowing back is called [missing character] Spring. [Origin] (Li Shizhen says): This is spring water emerging from between mountain rocks and soil, flowing into streams and ravines. (*Xiaoya* states): [Missing character] Fei and Kanquan are places where water gushes straight up. [Usage] (*Erya* states): Springs with distant sources and clear, cold water, or springs located in mountains with jade stones or fine vegetation, are of good quality. [Taste]: Sweet. [Nature]: Neutral. [Contraindications] (Lu Yu says): Drinking water that cascades violently and rushes turbulently can cause neck diseases. (Wang Ying says): Once in Xunyang, hundreds of horses died in the city in one day. Upon inquiry, it was learned that days prior, rain had washed toxins from snakes and insects out of the valleys, which the horses drank. [Avoidance] (*Erya* states): If the mountain has black soil, toxic stones, or noxious weeds, it should not be used.

Water from cart ruts: Mainly treats [missing character] Yangfeng (a type of skin disease); washing with it is very effective. Water from cow hooves can also be used. (From *Bencao Gangmu*) [Name] (Li Shizhen says): Rut refers to the tracks left by carts. [Time] (Collection): Collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

Non-toxic.

Water from pickled vegetables (Jishui): Mainly treats vomiting of various phlegm-fluids and retained food. (From *Bencao Gangmu*) [Name] (Li Shizhen says): This is the water from making yellow pickled vegetables. [Taste]: Sour, Salty. [Qi]: Sour. Bitter taste has the properties of inducing vomiting and purging, belonging to Yin.

Non-toxic.

Knife-grinding water: Main promotes urination and reduces heat-induced swelling. (From *Bencao Gangmu*) [Taste]: Salty. [Nature]: Cold. [Treatment] (*Huoren Xin* says): For sudden ear pain, drip iron slurry from grinding knives into the ear, and it will heal immediately. (*Jijian Fang*) Treats urinary retention: Drink one cup of water collected where two grinding knives cross; it is effective. (Another prescription) For anal swelling and pain impending hemorrhoids: Urgently take water from a butcher's knife grinding; it is very effective. [Combined Treatment] (Bian Que says): For difficult childbirth where the placenta remains stuck and the intestine is dry and cannot retract, use a small amount of knife-grinding water to lubricate the intestine, decoct one cup of Magnetitum (Cishi), take warm, and it will naturally retract. [Contraindication] Not suitable for washing hands, lest it cause damp sores. [Antidote] (*Jiuji Fang*) Says: To resolve snakebite venom attacking the abdomen, rub two knives together in water and drink the juice; it can resolve the toxicity.
