Ju (Citrus reticulata peel), [from *Shennong Bencao Jing*]: Mainly treats epigastric mass with heat, rebellious Qi rising upward, and promotes the movement of water and grain; long-term use removes foul odor, directs Qi downward, and benefits the spirit. (The above text in red characters is from *Shennong Bencao Jing*). Directs Qi downward, stops vomiting, stops cough, eliminates... (Recorded by famous physicians). [Names]: Jupi (Tangerine Peel), Zhuju, Taju, Shanju. [Seedling/Plant]: [According to *Tu Jing*] The tree grows over one zhang high; its leaves are indistinguishable from those of Zhi (Bitter Orange); thorns emerge from the stem. When harvested in summer, sliced open like a lotus flower and sun-dried, it is called Lianhua Qingpi (Lotus-shaped Green Peel); when harvested after the frost in October, fully mature, pungent in taste, and large/yellow, it is called Jupi (Tangerine Peel), which is the Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel) used by physicians, i.e., tangerine peel stored for a long time. Although these two medicines have different functions, they actually originate from the same source. Old editions grouped Ju (Mandarin Orange) and You (Pomelo) under the same entry; however, Ju and You are distinct species with different functions and properties/flavors, so You is separated into a subsequent entry. [Habitat]: [According to *Tu Jing*] Grows in southern mountains, rivers, valleys, and Jiangnan regions; currently found in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jingxiang, Huling, etc. [Authentic Origin]: Guangdong. [Season]: [Growth] New leaves sprout in spring. [Harvest]: Fruits collected in October. [Processing/Storage]: Sun-dried. [Usage]: Flesh, seeds, and peel are best when aged. [Texture]: Resembles Pomelo. [Color]: Yellow. [Flavor]: Pungent, Bitter. [Nature]: Warm, dispersing. [Qi/Scent]: Qi is stronger than flavor; belongs to Yin within Yang. [Odor]: Fragrant. [Main Actions]: Retaining the white albedo helps harmonize the Stomach and regulate the Middle Jiao; removing the white albedo resolves phlegm and directs Qi downward. [Meridian Tropism]: Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. [Guide Herb]: Baitan (Sandalwood) acts as a guide. [Preparation]: Remove the pulp, cut finely. [Therapeutic Effects]: [According to *Yaoxing Lun*] Peel removes Qi stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, opens the appetite, treats dysentery, resolves phlegm-fluids, and stops upper-jiao cough. [According to *Ri Hua Zi*] Tangerine stops thirst due to diabetes (Xiaoke), opens the appetite, and removes diaphragmatic Qi stagnation. ○ Tangerine resolves phlegm, stops cough, and breaks accumulations/masses. ○ The membrane on the tangerine segments stops thirst and vomiting after drinking wine. [According to *Chen Cangqi*] Tangerine stops diarrhea/dysentery, aids digestion, opens the appetite, and treats phlegm-stagnation in the diaphragm. [Combinations]: Combined with Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) tonifies Spleen and Stomach; combined with Gancao (Licorice Root) tonifies Lung Qi; combined with Gegen (Kudzu Root), Fuling (Poria), Gancao, and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) treats rebellious Qi that does not descend; He (Seeds) taken with wine treats lower back pain, coldness of the Bladder and Kidneys. [Detoxification]: [Peel] Antidote for fish poisoning. [Adulterants]: Wrinkled Pomelo peel and seed peel are adulterants.
Non-toxic, plant origin.
Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel) mainly treats Qi stagnation, promotes digestion, breaks accumulation and结 (knots), and resolves diaphragmatic Qi (Recorded by famous physicians). [Name]: Ruju. [Seedling/Plant]: According to *Bencao Jing*, the general description for Ju states it is pungent, has an alias Jupi, and is harvested in October; this refers to the current Huangju (Yellow Tangerine). Later generations, noting the pungent-bitter taste and size differences, divided them into two types. Currently, separate entries are established for clinical convenience. Essentially, Qingpi is the green peel of the tangerine fruit, sharing the same species as Huangju. However, due to differences in harvesting season, maturity, color, nature, and flavor, their therapeutic actions differ. Harvested after frost, yellow/large, mature, and pungent: called Huangju, enters Spleen/Stomach, moves Lung Qi. Harvested in June-July, immature, small/green, bitter: called Qingpi, enters Jueyin/Shaoyang meridians, soothes Liver Qi. This is analogous to Zhike (Aurantium) and Zhishi (Immature Aurantium) being from the same species: Zhike treats upper conditions due to its mild/slow action, while Zhishi treats lower conditions due to its harsh/intense action. [Habitat]: [Text fragment missing/implied]. [Leaf]: [Text fragment missing]. [Harvest]: Fruits collected in June-July. [Processing/Storage]: Sun-dried. [Usage]: Best when sliced into lotus-petal shapes with a knife. [Color]: Dark green/black. [Flavor]: Bitter, Pungent. [Nature]: Cold, draining. [Qi/Scent]: Qi is thin, flavor is strong; belongs to Yin. [Odor]: Fragrant. [Main Actions]: Dissolves hardness, attacks stagnation, aids digestion, calms the Spleen. [Meridian Tropism]: Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. [Preparation]: Remove pulp, crush. [Combinations]: Decocted with Congbai (Scallion White) and Tongbian (Child's Urine) to treat postpartum rebellious Qi in women; mixed with wine and taken as powder to treat Chuiru (Acute Mastitis), presenting as hard swelling like stone without itching or pain. [Contraindications]: Excessive consumption damages True Qi.
