[Toxic]
Loulanzi (Caulis Aconiti Lateralis Preparatus Immaturus) treats severe dysentery, cold leaking sores, malignant ulcers, and leprosy wind (Compendium of Materia Medica).
[Naming] Benbiezi, Huzhang. (Li Shizhen said) This is the small, unformed part of Fuzi (Prepared Lateral Root of Aconitum Carminatum), named Loulanzi because it is small and resembles a blue funnel. The smallest form of Xingrenanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis) is called Huzhang; this substance is similar to them.
[Origin] (Da Ming Hui Dian) records that Chengdu Prefecture in Sichuan annually paid tribute of twenty pairs of Tianxiong (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), fifty pairs of Fuzi, fifty pairs of Wutou (Radix Aconiti), and two thousand jin of Loulanzi, without specifying the use.
[Usage] (Li Shizhen said) According to Yang Shiying's Zhizhi Fang: For chronic leaking sores that have persisted for years, when it is necessary to restore the Original Yang (Yuan Yang), one should use Loulanzi and similar herbs with modifications. If used inappropriately or lightly, heat may enter through the deficiency, transforming into nodules and causing greater harm. Generally, this herb is unsuitable for internal administration and is only appropriate for external treatment of sores.
[Taste and Property] Bitter, Acrid.
[Contraindications] Lei Xiao said: Ingestion causes blindness.
[Treatment] (Lei Bian recorded): A person had sores on both feet that were foul and ulcerated, making them difficult to approach. Sleeping under the shrine of the Five Madams, he dreamed of a deity who prescribed a formula: take one piece of raw Loulanzi, grind it into powder, add a small amount of Nifen (Calomel), mix with well water and saliva, and apply according to the method. It was indeed cured.
[Combined Treatment] For all types of severe dysentery, mixed discharge, and chronic intermittent dysentery, Baishui Wan: Use one large Loulanzi, Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Yingsuqiao (Papaveris Pericarpium), each half liang, stir-fried until charred but retaining their essence. Add a small amount of Ruxiang (Olibanum), grind into powder, and make pills with paste the size of wuizi (similia fructus cerasi). Take one pill per year of age, washed down with rice drink.
[Slightly Toxic]
Fengxianzi (Semen Impatientis) treats difficult labor, accumulations, dysphagia, foreign bodies stuck in the throat, penetrating bones, and opening orifices (Compendium of Materia Medica).
[Naming] Jixingzi, Hanzhenzhu, Jinfenghua, Xiaotaohong, Ran Zhijia Cao, Juban, Hai, Jiazhugtao. (Li Shizhen said) Its flower head, wings, tail, and feet resemble a phoenix, with wings distinctly like those of a phoenix, hence the name. Women collect its flowers and leaves to wrap and dye their fingernails. The fruit resembles a small peach and bursts open when mature, giving rise to names like "Acute Nail" and "Small Peach." Due to the taboo of the character "Feng" during the reigns of Emperor Guangzong of Song and Empress Li, it was called Haonv'er Hua in the palace, Juban by Zhang Wanchiu, and Yuke by Scholar Wei.
[Origin] Fengxian is widely planted in households and grows easily.
[Season] Sow seeds in late February; can be replanted in May.
[Seedling] According to records: The seedling grows two to three chi tall. The stem has red and white colors, is as thick as a finger, hollow and brittle. The leaves are long and pointed, resembling peach or willow leaves but with serrated edges. Flowers appear between the branches, varying in color (yellow, white, red, purple, green, or mixed), changing spontaneously, shaped like flying birds. Blooming continues from early summer to late autumn. Fruits hang in clusters, cherry-sized, slightly elongated, colored like fuzzy peaches. When ripe, they burst upon touch, curling like a fist. Seeds inside resemble radish seeds but are smaller and brown. People harvest the fleshy stems to substitute for wo sun (Asparagus cochinchinensis); soaked in wine overnight, they are edible. However, this plant repels insects and bees/butterflies, suggesting it may not be entirely non-toxic.
[Taste] Slightly bitter.
[Nature] Warm.
[Qi] Thin Qi, Yin within Yang.
[Odor] Slightly fragrant.
[Main Action] (Li Shizhen said) Fengxianzi has a rapid nature, thus capable of penetrating bone and softening hardness. Butchers adding a few grains to tough meat or fish make it soften and rot easily; this verifies its efficacy.
[Contraindications] Because it penetrates bone, it damages teeth most severely. When taken as pills with Yuzhan Gen (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), do not let the pills touch the teeth. Excessive use may irritate the throat.
[Treatment] Dysphagia/food sticking (Zhai Xuan Fang): Soak Fengxianzi in wine for three nights, dry, grind to powder, make pills the size of mung beans with wine. Take eight pills with warm wine. Do not use excessively. This is also known as Jixingzi. ○ Bone stuck in throat, life-threatening (Pu Ji Fang): Grind white Fengxianzi with water to make a large mouthful, pour into the throat using a bamboo tube. The object will soften. Avoid contact with teeth, or blow the powder into the throat.
[Combined Treatment] Difficult labor/dystocia (Ji Jian Fang): Two qian of Fengxianzi, ground to powder, taken orally. Avoid contact with teeth. Externally, crush castor beans (Bimazi) according to the patient's age and apply to the sole of the foot. ○ Tooth extraction (Zhai Xuan Fang): Grind Jinfenghua seeds to powder, add a little Pi (Arsenic Trioxide), apply to the painful tooth root to extract it. ○ Pediatric abdominal mass (Sun Tianren Ji Xiao Fang): One liang each of Jixingzi, Shuihonghua Zi (Polygoni Orientalis Fructus), and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), all raw-ground to powder. Take five qian of each. Mix with one liang of Pinxiao (Natrii Sulfas). Prepare one white pigeon or duck, remove feathers and excrement, eviscerate without water contact, wipe clean with cloth. Stuff the powder inside, tie tightly with cotton. Place in a clay pot with three bowls of water, seal heavily with paper, boil slowly until dry. Roast the bird until yellow, cool, and eat in the morning. By evening, the disease softens; after three days, bloody stool passes, and the disease is cured. Avoid cold foods for 100 days. The flower is non-toxic, treats snakebites by grinding with wine and drinking; also treats unbearable pain radiating from the waist and hypochondrium. Make into cakes, dry, grind to powder, take three qian with wine on an empty stomach to invigorate blood and dissipate accumulations (Compendium of Materia Medica).
[Taste] Sweet and slippery.
[Nature] Warm.
[Combined Treatment] (Wu Fushou Jing Fang) For rheumatism causing bedridden state: Wash/bathe with decoction of Jinfenghua, Baizi Ren (Platycladi Semen), Pinxiao, and Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), two to three times daily. Internally, take Duhuo Jisheng Tang.
The root is slightly toxic, treats chicken/fish bone impaction, accidental ingestion of copper/iron, trauma swelling/pain, disperses blood, unblocks meridians, softens hardness, and penetrates bone (Compendium of Materia Medica).
[Taste] Bitter, Sweet, Acrid.
[Treatment] Hard objects in throat (Wei Shi De Xiao Fang): Chew Jin Feng Hua root thoroughly and hold/swallow; the bone will pass naturally, especially effective for chicken bones. Rinse mouth with warm water to avoid damaging teeth. Also treats accidental ingestion of copper/iron. ○ Trauma swelling/pain (Ye Tingqi Tong Bian Yao Fa): Crush Fengxianhua leaves into mud, apply to swollen/broken areas. Reapply at night if dry; blood disperses and heals. In winter, collect and shade-dry, grind to powder, mix with water and apply. ○ Equine diseases (Wei Sheng Yi Jian Fang): Boil white Fengxianhua with roots and leaves into a paste. Apply to the four corners of the horse's eyes when sick; sweating occurs and the horse recovers.
