Shijueming (Haliotis Concha, Abalone Shell) treats eye obstructions, pain from nebulae (corneal opacity), and blindness (Qingmang). Long-term use benefits essence (Jing) and lightens the body (recorded by Famous Physicians). [Name] Nine-hole Snail (Jiukong Luo). [Origin] According to *Tujing*, it is produced in the South Sea; currently found in various prefectures of Lingnan and Denglai Prefecture. Old theories suggest it might be Purple Cowrie (Zibei) or the shell of Fu fish (Bu Jue Qie). Note: Zibei refers to the snails polished by people today, which were used as currency by ancients, definitely not this category. Fu fish was what Wang Mang ate; one side attaches to stones with a lovely luster, a species similar to Shijueming. Shijueming grows attached to stones; shells as large as hands or small as two or three fingers are common. Sea people also eat its meat and use its shells soaked in water to wash eyes. Those with seven or nine holes are good; those with ten holes are inferior. According to *Yanyi*: The classics state the flavor is salty, referring to its meat. People harvest the meat for food and dry it for transport to the capital, where northerners regard it as a delicacy. Both meat and shell are usable; practitioners should use them judiciously. [Season] [Growth] No fixed season. [Harvest] No fixed season. [Part Used] Shell. [Color] White. [Flavor] Salty. [Nature] Flat and soft. [Qi] Flavor is stronger than Qi; belongs to Yin within Yang. [Odor] Fishy. [Main Action] Brightens the eyes, grinds away nebulae. [Preparation] According to Leigong: First remove the rough outer skin. Boil with salt mud and East-flowing water in a large porcelain vessel for one double-hour (Fushi). Remove, wipe dry, crush into powder, and grind until fine. Then place in a pot with Wuhua Pi (Bark of Five Flowers), Diyü (Radix Sanguisorbae), and Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) and East-flowing water in porcelain, rinsing three times. Dry again and grind ten thousand times before use. For five liang of preparation, take half a fen of salt for the second boiling, using ten liang each of Diyü, Wuhua Pi, and Ejiao. Alternatively, grind finely and process by water flotation. [Treatment] According to *Haiyao Bencao*: Eliminates Qingmang, internal cataracts, wind-heat of Liver and Lung, bone-steaming consumptive fever, and extreme exhaustion. According to *Bielu*: Stops five types of strangury (Wulin) of the Small Intestine. [Combined Treatment] Mix with rotten wood powder, take with cooked water to treat strangury caused by hard or soft objects. [Contraindication] After consumption, never eat Mountain Peach (Shantao), as it causes blindness.
Non-toxic. Generated naturally.
Haige (Clam Shell, Arca Granosa) (from *Shennong Benjing*) treats cough with rebellious Qi, rapid breathing, irritability, fullness, chest pain, and alternating chills and fever (Zhu characters above are from *Shennong Benjing*). Treats impotence (Hei characters above recorded by Famous Physicians). [Name] Kui Ge, Fulao. [Origin] According to *Tujing*, produced in the East Sea; currently found in Denglai and Cangzhou. Tao Hongjing considered those fine like Sesame seeds, moist, lustrous, and clean as Haige, claiming they gained luster after being eaten by wild geese and excreted in large quantities. Chen Cangqi stated: Haige are rotting shells in the sea, naturally rounded and clean after long exposure to sand, mud, wind, and waves. They vary in size; smaller ones are preferred as older specimens, not originating from goose droppings. However, true aged Haige are rare; sea people often fake them with other clam shells polished smooth by wind and waves, which lack efficacy. Another type, Youbo Gu, resembles Haige but lacks luster; accidental ingestion causes madness and dizziness, cured with vinegar and honey. According to *Shuowen*, "A thousand-year-old swallow transforms into Haige." *Yanyi* comments on Chen Cangqi's view: Today there are no geese in the sea; how could they eat clam feces? If the shell contains meat, it can be eaten; once the meat is gone, how could there be feces? The theory that they lose their edges due to long-term wind and wave erosion is correct. [Season] [Growth] No fixed season. [Harvest] April and May. [Part Used] Shell. [Color] Cyan-white. [Flavor] Bitter and Salty. [Nature] Flat and draining. [Qi] Flavor is stronger than Qi; belongs to Yin. [Odor] Fishy. [Main Action] Stops thirst, moistens the Five Viscera. [Assistant Herb] Shuqi acts as an assistant. [Incompatibility] Averse to Goudan (Dog Gallbladder), Gansui (Radix Euphorbiae Kansui), and Yuanhua (Flos Genkwa). [Preparation] According to Leigong: Process one liang by boiling in sour water for one Fushi, then boil again with Digupi (Cortex Lycii) and Baiye (Cupressi Cacumen) for another Fushi. Rinse three times in East-flowing water, wipe dry, crush finely, and grind to powder. For one liang, use two liang of Digupi, finely cut, and rinse with East-flowing water. [Treatment] According to *Tangben Zhu*: Eliminates twelve types of edema and urgent pain, promotes urination via Bladder, Large Intestine, and Small Intestine. According to *Yaoxing Lun*: Reduces water qi edema, promotes urination, and treats goiter under the neck. According to *Rimazi*: Stops vomiting, rebellious Qi, chest/hypochondriac distension, lower back pain, five hemorrhoids, and uterine bleeding/leukorrhea in women. According to Meng Shen: Stops thirst, moistens Five Viscera, and treats sores in those taking mineral pills (Danshi). [Combined Treatment] Grind two liang for three days, combine with Han Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), and Jiazrou (Date Flesh) each two liang, and Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae) six liang. Grind into a paste, make pills. Take ten pills per dose to promote diuresis and treat water retention. [Counterfeit] Youbo Gu is counterfeit; accidental ingestion causes madness and dizziness, cured with vinegar and honey.
