Fanmubie (Strychnos nux-vomica) primarily treats pharyngeal obstruction and pain caused by cold-heat diseases in Shanghan (Cold Damage), and eliminates palpable masses; it can be held in the mouth to swallow the juice, or ground into water and held in the mouth to swallow (cited from *Bencao Gangmu*). [Names] Maqianzi (Nux Vomica Seed), Kushiba Dou, Huoshikebadu. [Origin] (Li Shizhen said) Fanmubie grows in Hui Guo (India/Central Asia); currently, it is found everywhere westward to Qiongzhou and other places. [Morphology] It is a vine that produces yellow flowers in summer, resembling Mubie (Strychnos pseudochina), but its seeds are smaller than those of Mubie and white in color. Local people say it can treat one hundred and twenty types of diseases, with specific decoctions as guides for each condition; some say it is effective when processed with tofu; others claim it can poison dogs to death. [Harvest Time] Fruits form in July and August, resembling Trichosanthes fruit. [Color] Green when raw, reddish when ripe. [Texture] (Li Shizhen said) Its shape resembles the linked coins of the horse plant, hence the name Maqian. [Medicinal Part] Seeds. [Taste] Bitter. [Nature] Cold. [Qi and Taste] Qi is thin, taste is bitter, belonging to Yin. [Indications] Crush Kushiba Dou into a paste and insert it three to four cun deep into the vagina to expel the placenta. [Compound Treatments] Mix Fanmubie, Qingmuxiang (Costus Root), and Shandougen (Sophora Tonkinensis Root) in equal parts, grind into powder, and treat sore throat due to Hou Bi (Laryngeal Obstruction). ○ Take one seed of Fanmubie and three fen of Muxiang (Aquilaria Wood), grind together with water, add three fen of Xiongdan (Bear Bile) and five fen of Danfan (Alum), apply with a chicken feather to swab swelling caused by Chan Hou Feng (Throat Wrapping Wind) for efficacy. ○ For sores entering the eyes, take half a Kushiba Dou (i.e., Maqianzi), five fen of Qingfen (Calomel), five fen of Shuihuayin (Silver Powder), five fen of Zhusha (Cinnabar), and a small amount of Pian Nao (Borneol), Shexiang (Musk), and Kufan (Burnt Alum), grind into powder. If the left eye is affected, blow the powder into the right ear; if the right eye is affected, blow it into the left ear. Do this twice daily.

Yuejihua (Chinese Rose) invigorates blood, reduces swelling, and applies to toxic sores (cited from *Bencao Gangmu*). [Names] Yueyuehong, Shengchun, Shouke, Douxuehong. [Origin] (Li Shizhen said) It is planted in most households; it also belongs to the Rosa genus. [Morphology] The stem is green, long and vining, with hard thorns; leaves are smaller than those of Rosa multiflora, with dense double petals, and it does not produce seeds. [Flowering Time] Blooms every month. [Color] Deep red flowers. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature] Warm. [Qi and Taste] Qi is thin, taste is light, belonging to slight Yang within Yin. [Compound Treatments] To treat Luo Li (Scrofula) that has not yet ulcerated, use two qian of Yuejihua head, five qian of Chenxiang (Agarwood), and three qian of stir-fried Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower). Chop them finely, place inside a large crucian carp, seal with fish intestines, add one liang of wine and one liang of water, cook until done, and eat. This will cure the condition. The fish must have died after swimming in manure water to be effective. This is a family secret recipe that has saved many lives.
