[Yellow Glutinous Millet]
Non-toxic. Grows in dense clusters.
Yellow glutinous millet (Huangliang Mi) primarily functions to tonify qi, harmonize the middle jiao, and stop diarrhea (recorded by Famous Physicians). [Seedlings] (Note of *Xinxiu Bencao*): The seedlings and grains of yellow glutinous millet are similar to white glutinous millet (Bailiang Mi), but have larger ears and longer awns; the husks and grains are coarser than those of white glutinous millet, yield fewer seeds, and are less resistant to waterlogging or drought. It is fragrant and delicious, surpassing other millets, and people call it "Bamboo Root Yellow". [Origin] (Tao Hongjing states): Produced in Qingzhou and Jizhou.
[Color] Yellow. [Flavor] Sweet. [Nature] Mild and steady. [Qi] The aroma is stronger than the flavor, belonging to Yang. [Odor] Fragrant. [Therapeutic Actions] (*Rihua Zi Bencao* states): Expels external wind pathogens, treats stubborn bi-syndrome (Wanbi).
(*Bencao Jing Jiuzhu* states): Half a sheng of millet flour, mixed with half its volume in water, squeezed to extract juice, taken at once like a white beverage, treats Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome) with restlessness. ○ Five sheng of grains, boiled in ten dou of water until three sheng remain, clarified and drunk slowly in small amounts, treats excessive thirst after vomiting and diarrhea from Huoluan; drinking too much will cause death. ○ When used as food, it stops dysentery and eliminates conditions caused by exposure to wind while lying wet, or cold invasion. [Combined Treatments]: One sheng of millet powder mixed with honey and water, applied externally to sores on children's faces and bodies that burn like fire. ○ Millet flour mixed with egg white applied externally for persistent red erysipelas (Chi Dan) in children.
[Shu Mi / Sorghum Grain]
Non-toxic.
Shu mi (Shumi) primarily functions to warm the middle, direct rebellious qi downward, and clear heat (recorded by Famous Physicians). [Seedlings] (Tao Hongjing states): This refers to the yeast cake made from Shu mi, not a different name for rice/grain. (Note of *Xinxiu Bencao* states): "Qu" (Yeast/Culture) is named because it grows contrary to normal logic; it must be made from viable substances, just as wheat is used for Qu. Tao claimed making Qu from grain, but how can the grain regenerate? One should only take the grain within the Qu. I consulted *Shi Jing*, which mentions using Dao Qu (Rice Yeast); "Dao" refers to the name of the grain, clearly indicating it is not made from processed rice. (*Yanyi* states): Shu mi is rice grain. If it has already been processed into rice, it is difficult to make Qu again. In the current formula Gushen San, it is used, and its nature is warmer than Da Mai Qu (Barley Yeast). [Harvest] Sun-dried. [Usage] Qu (Yeast/Culture). [Color] Yellow-white. [Flavor] Bitter and sweet. [Nature] Slightly warm. [Qi] Aroma stronger than flavor, Yang within Yin. [Odor] Fragrant. [Main Functions] Digests retained food, opens the appetite. [Processing] Grind into powder. [Therapeutic Actions] (*Rihua Zi Bencao* states): (Text ends abruptly here).
[Pounding Pestle Fine Bran]
Non-toxic.
Fine bran from the pounding pestle head primarily treats sudden yue (sudden dysphagia/choking) (recorded by Famous Physicians). [Origin] (Tao Hongjing states): Not recorded in old texts; available everywhere now. To treat sudden food impaction, scrape some off and hold in the mouth to remove it; this aligns with the meaning of pounding. Many matters in the world have such mutual influences. (Shaoxing Revised Edition states): Although *Shennong Bencao Jing* does not record nature and flavor, they should logically be the same as rice. Stating it treats sudden yue likely borrows the concept for application. [Season] (Growth) No specific time. (Collection) No specific time. [Color] Yellow-white. [Flavor] Sweet. [Nature] Neutral. [Qi] Light aroma, Yang within Yin. [Odor] Fragrant. [Main Functions] Dysphagia/food stagnation. [Therapeutic Actions] (*Liao*) (Tao Hongjing states): Treats sudden food impaction; scrape some and hold in the mouth to remove it. (*Bencao Jing Jiuzhu* states): Burn to ash, take one fangcun bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch scoop) orally to facilitate childbirth. [Combined Treatments]: Mix with honey to form pills the size of a bullet, suck one pill anytime, swallowing saliva, to treat Ge Qi (obstruction in the chest/diaphragm), throat choking sensation, and inability to swallow food. [Contraindications] Do not use as a pillow for infants; doing so can damage their eyesight.
