Non-toxic. Appendix: Fish eggs, oviparous. (Pronounced 'yi', also pronounced 'ti'). Fish, treats a hundred diseases (Recorded by famous physicians). [Name] Fish. [Location] [Tu Jing says] It is the large fish, abundant in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Large head, square mouth, eyes positioned high on top, small tail, back dark green-black, body smooth and scaleless, producing much mucus. There are three types. Tao Hongjing said: It is the (pronounced 'ti') fish, it is the fish. There is also the (pronounced 'hu') fish, similar but larger. The (pronounced 'wu hui qie') fish, called 'fish' by people in Qin, is also similar, with a yellow back and white belly, and is delicious. The shapes of these three types are similar in nature, but differ in size. These three fish are generally cold in nature and toxic, not being excellent food ingredients. Also named. "Shi Jing · Xiao Ya" states: "Fish lie upon..." "Li Zhuan" states: It is... "Er Ya · Shi Yu" Guo Pu's annotation states: Now known as forehead-white fish. Alias. People in Jiangdong commonly call it this. Now widely eaten in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. [Tao Hongjing said] There is also a human-like fish, resembling [the above] but having four feet, making sounds like a child. Eating it treats abdominal masses. Its fat does not burn out when ignited; it was used in Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum at Lishan, called human fat. Now, Qingxi in Linju, Jingzhou, produces much of this fish. Presumably because its shape is similar but has four feet as an anomaly, it is appended here. [Season] [Growth] No specific season. [Harvest] No specific season. [Color] Dark green-black. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature] Cold and mild. [Qi] Thin Qi, Yin within Yang. [Odor] Fishy. [Main Action] Promotes urination, reduces edema. [Treatment] [Therapy] [Tu Jing says] Mucus treats San Xiao (Three Wasting-Thirst syndromes). [Bie Lu says] Burn fish eyes to ash and apply to wounds from thorns poisoned by water. [Combined Treatment] Mix fresh fish mucus with Coptidis Rhizoma powder to make pills, take 5-7 pills after meals with dried plum decoction, stops wasting-thirst. [Contraindications] Fish without scales are toxic, do not eat excessively. Those combined with deer meat, or those with red eyes, red whiskers, and no gills, can kill people. ○ Fish should not be eaten with ox liver, causing wind syndrome and frequent choking. ○ Fish should not be eaten in all four seasons, nor combined with wild boar meat, causing vomiting and diarrhea. ○ Fish can aggravate chronic diseases; do not eat with pheasant or wild boar meat, causing leprosy-like skin diseases.
Non-toxic. Oviparous. Crucian carp, treats various sores, burn with sauce and paste, or fry with lard. Also treats intestinal abscess. ○ Head ash treats infant scalp sores, oral ulcers, double tongue, and corneal opacity. Made into soup, treats weak stomach and inability to eat. Made into [paste/soup], treats chronic bloody and white dysentery (Recorded by famous physicians). [Name] Fu Fish. [Location] [Tu Jing says] Previously did not record the originating provinces/lands; now found in ponds and marshes everywhere. Resembles common carp, black color, short body, large belly, and arched back. Small ones weigh 8-9 taels, large ones 2-3 jin; among all fish, most edible. Some say it transforms from broomcorn millet, hence there is still millet-colored residue in its belly. Another type with a high back and narrow/small belly is named [unspecified] fish, with functions similar to crucian carp but weaker efficacy. Also, Qinzhou has a heavy-lipped stone crucian carp, which is also of this category. [Season] [Growth] No specific season. [Harvest] No specific season. [Usage] Meat and head. [Quality] Similar to common carp but shorter body. [Color] Dark green-black. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature] Warm and mild. [Qi] Strong Qi, thin taste, Yin within Yang. [Odor] Fishy. [Main Action] Harmonizes Stomach Qi, benefits the Five Viscera. [Treatment] [Shen says] Harmonizes Stomach Qi, regulates the Middle Jiao. [Shi Liao says] Burn bones to ash and apply to sores for 3-5 times until healed. ○ Eggs regulate the Middle Jiao, benefit Liver Qi. [Bie Lu says] Gallbladder treats infant brain rickets, nasal itching with hair growing in tufts, sallow complexion and emaciation; take juice and drip into nose, effective after 3-5 days. [Tonification] [Ri Hua Zi says] Tonifies insufficiency. [Chen Zangqi says] Treats deficiency and emaciation. [Combined Treatment] Brew Alum, burn to ash, treats intestinal wind bloody dysentery. ○ Mix with salt inside the belly, burn to ash, apply to toothache. Make into [dish] with Piperis Fructus, Dried Ginger, Anethum graveolens, and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium as soup, treats cold Qi in Spleen and Stomach, inability to eat, weakness and lack of strength. ○ Head ash mixed with soy sauce juice applied to infant facial impetigo. ○ Burn to ash, mix with wine and take, treats epidemic cold-heat during pregnancy. ○ Meat mixed with adzuki bean powder, pounded into paste, mixed with water and applied to infant erysipelas. ○ Burn to ash, mix with vinegar and take, treats wind-stroke with cold-heat and abdominal colic. [Taboos] Do not eat with pig liver. ○ If eaten with rock sugar, causes pinworms. ○ Crucian carp eggs should not be eaten with monkey meat, pheasant meat, or pork.
