Fukui [Choy Sum/Water Shield], refers to Choy Sum (Chuncai). Old texts do not specify its origin provinces, only stating it grows in water. Now it is found everywhere in ponds and marshes. Its leaves resemble [shape implied by context/illustration], stems are slippery/astringent, roots are very long, flowers are yellow; it grows extremely luxuriantly in water. According to "Erya": This plant is called Jieyu, and its leaves are called Fu. Guo Pu believed it grows in clusters in water, with round leaves at the tips of the stems, their length varying with the depth of the water. People in Jiangdong eat it. It is what is referred to as "uneven xing cai" (Oxalis corniculata or similar aquatic plant) in the "Book of Songs · Zhou Nan". Lu Ji said: The stem is white, leaves are purple-red, perfectly round, slightly more than one cun in diameter, floating on the water surface. Roots are at the bottom of the water, thick as a hairpin shaft, green on top and white below. People sell its white stems, soaking them in bitter wine (vinegar) to make them crisp and delicious, suitable as an appetizer. Nowadays, people do not eat it, and it is rarely used in medical prescriptions.

Lichang [Eclipta Prostrata], also known as Lianzicao. Old texts do not record its origin provinces, only stating it grows in low, wet places. Now it is found everywhere, especially abundant in the south. There are two varieties: One has leaves resembling willow leaves but glossy, stems resembling Portulaca oleracea (Purslane), growing about one to two chi tall, with small white flowers, and fruits resembling small lotus pods. Su Gong said: The seedling resembling Inula japonica (Xuanfu) is this variety; another variety has withered and thin stems, resembling lotus flowers but yellow, and the fruit is also pod-like and round. Southerners call it Lianqiao. For both varieties, when picking the seedlings, juice flows out and turns black after a short while. Therefore, they are often used as medicines for darkening hair. Commonly known as Hanlianzi (Dry Lotus Seed). Harvested in March and August, dried in shade, also called Jinlingcao. Sun Simiao in "Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold · Monthly Regulations" states: It benefits beard and hair, turning white hair black. Decoction method for Jinlingcao: Take one cheng of Jinlingcao, harvested after June, select those without soil, do not wash, must be green and tender, free from yellow leaves, then pound and grind thoroughly. Squeeze out the juice using new cloth, filter through gauze and silk to remove all dregs, place in a glazed earthenware vessel, and simmer in the sun. After five days, take one jin of fresh ginger, squeeze out the juice, add one jin of white honey, mix well, and continue simmering. Stir constantly with a willow wood spatula until uniform. Place again in the sun to simmer until it resembles thin syrup, indicating the medicine is ready. Take one spoon each morning and afternoon, dissolved in a cup of warm wine. If making pills, simmer again in the sun until it can form pills, sized like wu zi (Cocculus trilobus seeds), taken according to the previous method with wine, thirty pills at a time. It is best to prepare a large quantity in advance, as its effect is very rapid.
