Moisten the Liver, Brighten the Eyes
Sweet in taste and slightly cold in nature. Enters the Qi and Blood levels of the Liver Meridian. Moistens liver dryness. Treats red veins in the eyes (Hongmai), blindness (Qingmang), corneal opacities (Fuyi), redness and swelling of the eyes, excessive eye discharge (Chishi) and tearing, as well as eye diseases caused by infantile malnutrition (Ganqi) attacking the eyes. Produced in Shu region (modern Sichuan). The leaves do not fall in winter, and its flowers are dense and fluffy, hence the name. Select clean herbs, soak in wine until volume shrinks, wait until dry, mix with honey, steam, and sun-dry; repeat this process three times.
Drain Fire, Cool Blood, Detoxify
Pungent in taste and neutral in nature, slippery texture with viscous saliva. Clears Lung heat, cools blood, dissipates heat, relieves pain, reduces swelling, and discharges pus. Has special efficacy in treating all kinds of carbuncles, ulcers, swellings, and toxins (Use Hibiscus mutabilis flower, or leaves, bark, or roots; crush fresh or grind dried into powder, mix with honey to apply around the periphery of the lesion, leaving the head open. Change frequently when dry. For early stage, it feels cool immediately, pain stops, and swelling subsides. For formed abscesses, it promotes pus discharge. For ulcerated lesions, it facilitates healing. Surgeons secretly name it Liangjiang Gao, Qinglu San, Tiegu San, all referring to this substance. Alternatively, add Phaseolus angularis powder, or burn Xanthium sibiricum to retain its charred nature and grind into powder, adding it is also excellent).
Drain Fire, Cool Blood
Sweet and slightly pungent, cold in nature. Red color, enters the Blood level. Treats hematemesis, epistaxis, and wind-intestinal bleeding (Changfeng). Mix powder with sesame oil to apply to scalds and burns. Take red-colored material as powder, mix with child's urine, ginger juice, and wine for oral administration; can substitute Curcuma wenyujin (Yujin).
Drain Heat
Bitter and cool in nature. Invigorates blood, moistens dryness. Treats wind-intestinal bleeding (Changfeng), bloody stool, and thirst after dysentery. Taken as a decoction, induces sleep. Sichuan-produced variety treats tinea corporis (Tinea involves parasites; soak Chrysophyllum oliviforme bark in soap water, apply occasionally, or use the extract to grind Realgar externally, which is especially good). Use roots and bark.
Disperse, Resolve Swelling
Pungent and warm in nature. Removes foul qi, disperses wind-toxicity. Treats Hongxiangjiao (Beriberi/Edema of legs) causing swelling and pain, abdominal distension and fullness, and washes toxic sores (Liu Zinong's *Jiusi Fang* states: When Beriberi strikes at midnight causing blockage, flank masses hard as stone, coma and impending death, Zheng Xunmei transmitted Shanmu Tang. After a short while, significant purging occurs, masses disperse, and qi flows freely. Use 1 sheng of Cunninghamia lanceolata nodes, 1 sheng of Citrus reticulata leaves (use bark if no leaves), 7 Areca catechu seeds crushed with kernels, 3 sheng of child's urine; boil, divide into two doses. If one dose yields rapid purgation, stop the second dose). There are red and white varieties; those with red oily spots resembling pheasant feathers are particularly prized for making coffins. The wood is straight; burned to charcoal, it most easily ignites gunpowder.
