Moisten the lungs and stop coughing.
Sweet, neutral in nature. It moistens the lungs, calms the mind (Shen, 神), clears heat, stops coughing, supplements healthy qi (Zheng Qi, 正气), harmonizes the middle jiao (Middle Burner, 中焦), and stops rhinorrhea and lacrimation (Excessive rhinorrhea and lacrimation indicate heat in the Lung and Liver meridians. The Classics state: The Lung manifests as rhinorrhea, the Liver as lacrimation, the Heart as sweating, the Spleen as saliva, and the Kidney as thick saliva). It promotes urination and defecation. It treats edema, abdominal distension, epigastric fullness with alternating chills and fever, sores, carbuncles, and mastitis. It treats Baihe Bing (Lily Disease) caused by Cold Damage (characterized by restlessness in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, with a hallucinatory sensation as if possessed by spirits. Su Song said: "The disease is named after the lily, and treated with the lily; I do not understand the rationale." Li Shicai said: "This is due to the efficacy of clearing the heart and calming the spirit." Zhu Eryun said: "Patients with chronic cough inevitably have deficient Lung Qi; deficiency requires astringency. The sweet astringency of Baihe is superior to the sour astringency of Wuweizi"). White flowers are used for medicinal purposes.
Commonly known as Radish.
Dispersing, promoting Qi circulation, resolving phlegm, aiding digestion.
Pungent and sweet, associated with the Earth element. Raw consumption raises Qi, while cooked consumption descends Qi. It broadens the middle, resolves phlegm, disperses blood stasis, and aids digestion (Danxi stated: "When Qi rises, food digestion naturally follows"). It treats hematemesis, epistaxis, coughing with acid regurgitation, promotes urination and defecation, detoxifies alcohol, counters the toxicity of wheat flour, and resolves tofu accumulation (Once, a person fell ill and dreamed of a woman in red leading him into a palace, where a younger sister sang: "Wu Ling Pavilion is exquisite at dawn, Tian Fu has always been here. Sorrowful and stifled feelings remain unspoken, one pill of Laifu sets my palace ablaze." A Daoist priest said: "This is poisoning from large barley." The woman represents the Heart Spirit, and the younger sister represents the Spleen Spirit. The Medical Classics record: Laifu counters flour toxicity. Thus, medicine was administered together with Laifu, resulting in a cure. Soy milk fails to coagulate when encountering Laifu). Freshly crushed juice treats Jin Kou Li (Jin Kou Dysentery, dysentery accompanied by inability to eat or drink), stops thirst, and topical application treats traumatic injuries, scalds, and burns. Excessive consumption depletes blood, causing white hair and beard in previously dark-haired individuals (Contraindicated for those taking He Shou Wu [Polygoni Multiflori Radix] and Di Huang [Rehmanniae Radix]; Ginger can counteract its toxicity. Eating several catties of this vegetable in summer prevents dysentery in autumn. In winter, spread the leaves on roof tiles to be subjected to frost and snow; collect them in spring, decoct in water, and drink to effectively treat dysentery. Someone seeking refuge in a stone cave was smoked out by bandits; holding a piece of Laifu in his mouth prevented smoke toxicity. Chewing the juice and drinking it with water also works. Wang Jinggong suffered from hemicephalic headache. Crushed Laifu juice was instilled into the nostrils while supine: right nostril for left-sided pain, left nostril for right-sided pain, or both simultaneously. This cured his decades-long affliction after two applications).
Laifu Zi (Radish Seed) enters the Lung meridian via its pungency and travels to the Spleen via its sweetness; it excels at promoting Qi movement. Raw use raises Qi, while cooked use descends Qi. Raising Qi induces vomiting of wind-phlegm, disperses wind-cold, broadens the chest and diaphragm, and erupts sores/rashes; Descending Qi settles phlegm-wheezing and coughing, regulates tenesmus after dysentery, and stops internal pain (All these effects stem from its Qi-promoting action. Danxi stated: "Laifu Zi treats phlegm with the power to crash through walls and topple battlements." *Shi Yi Xin Jing* records grinding into powder and decocting in water to treat Qi-cough, phlegm-wheezing, and expectoration of pus and blood). Use after stir-frying.
