Tonifying Yang (Zhuru, Stalactite)
Sweet and warm. A herb acting on the Qi level of the Yangming channel (Stomach). It is the essence condensed from wood and stone. It strengthens Yin, benefits Yang, unblocks all joints, opens the nine orifices, tonifies deficiency and consumptive diseases, and promotes lactation.
Taking it causes a sudden surge of Yang Qi, significantly increases food intake, and makes the physique robust and vigorous. However, its nature is fierce; it should only be used occasionally when the True Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life) is deficient. If used to indulge in lust, excessive or long-term consumption inevitably leads to disorders such as stranguria, turbid urine, carbuncles, and sores. It originates from caves, formed by the condensation of liquid stone, hanging down like icicles. Those that are hollow, thin and light, resembling goose quills, and break open with a shine like fingernails are genuine. Refining and compounding should follow the methods specified in this text, using Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi, 蛇床子) as an guiding agent. It is incompatible with Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Mudanpi, 牡丹皮) and Fluminis Lapis (Zi Shiyun, 紫石英). Dietary restrictions include Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), mutton, Allium Fistulosum (Congbai, 葱), Allium Sativum (Suan, 蒜), and Coriandri Fructus (Huxu, 胡荽).
Heavy, Moistening the Lung (Bai Shiyin, White Quartz)
Sweet, pungent, and slightly warm. A herb acting on the Qi level of the Lung and Large Intestine channels. Its moistening property removes dryness, promotes urination, and consolidates the Large Intestine. It treats lung abscess with purulent sputum, cough, and rebellious Qi. However, being a mineral substance, it can only be used temporarily (The *Ten Categories* states: "Moistening agents can remove dryness; Bai Shiyin and Zi Shiyin belong to this category. 'Moist' here refers to 'moistening'. Note: There are many moistening herbs, but mineral drugs are ultimately drying. Xu Zhicai selected these two quartzes as moistening agents; preserving this intent is worthwhile"). Those white as crystal are of good quality.
Heavy, Calming the Heart, Moistening, Tonifying the Liver (Zi Shiyin, Purple Quartz)
Sweet and neutral. Its nature is warm and tonifying; its heaviness dispels fear, and its moisture removes dryness. It enters the Blood level of the Heart and Liver channels. Therefore, it is suitable for those with unsettled Heart Spirit, insufficient Liver Blood, and women suffering from infertility due to deficiency-cold in the Sea of Blood (The Chong vessel is the Sea of Blood, and the Ren vessel governs conception. *Jing Shu* states: The uterus is connected to the Kidney and Pericardium; deficiency allows Wind-Cold to invade, causing infertility. Zi Shiyin is pungent and warm, traversing these two channels, dispersing Wind-Cold, calming the Lower Jiao, and serving as a key herb for warming the uterus). Those with a deep purple color, transparent and crystalline, having five facets are preferred. Calcine over fire, quench in vinegar seven times, grind into powder, and process by water levigation. Both quartzes are wary of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子). They are incompatible with Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) (Quartz comes in five colors, each corresponding to the Five Zang organs).
Detoxifying, Killing Parasites (Xionghuang, Realgar)
Pungent and warm, toxic. It receives pure Yang Qi and enters the Qi level of the Liver channel. It searches out Liver pathogens, strengthens the Spleen, disperses severe Wind affecting all joints, kills various toxins, and repels malevolent spirits. It treats convulsions, epilepsy, and phlegm-saliva accumulation, headache, vertigo, summerheat malaria and dysentery, diarrhea, and accumulations (Yu Yonggong encountered summerheat while traveling, suffering from diarrhea and dysentery for months. He dreamed of a celestial abode where he was invited to sit. Words on the wall read: "Summer-heat toxin resides in the Spleen, dampness connects to the feet; if not diarrhea, then dysentery; if not dysentery, then malaria. Only refined Xionghuang, mixed with steamed dough pills, and taken with Licorice decoction brings peace and joy. Other treatments are major errors." Following this prescription led to recovery). It can also transform blood into water, dry dampness, kill parasites, and treat consumptive diseases, infantile malnutrition, sores, scabies, and snakebites. Those red like a rooster's comb, bright and clear without odor, weighing three to five taels, are of good quality. Soak in vinegar, boil with Raphani Fructus juice, and use dried. Those growing in the shade of mountains are called Niu Huang (Yinghuang, Arsenolite), with similar functions. Inferior quality is called Xun Huang, which smells foul when burned and is only suitable for fumigating sores and killing lice.
