[Alii Folium / Aloe]
[Harm] Aloe possesses a bitter and cold nature. If taken by those with weak Spleen and Stomach, it may cause persistent diarrhea (Dongxie). Therefore, it is strictly contraindicated for children with weak Spleen and Stomach who have poor appetite or suffer from diarrhea.
[Efficacy] Aloe is extremely bitter and cold. Its function specializes in clearing heat and killing parasites, cooling the Liver to brighten the eyes, calming the Heart to relieve irritability, treating convulsions and epilepsy, and applying externally to treat damp tinea of the teeth and tinea corporis.
[Processing] Aloe originates from Persia. It resembles black tin and is actually a resin. It can be harvested at any time; the genuine product is bitter in taste and green in color.
[Mimenghua / Flos Buddlejae Officinalis]
[Efficacy] Mimenghua is sweet and slightly cold. It moistens the Liver and dries dampness, treating red veins in the eyes (Chimai), blindness (Qingmang) and corneal opacities (Yunyi [phonetic meaning: eye disease]), red and swollen eyes with excessive discharge (Shizhiyan), and treating pediatric malnutrition attacking the eyes (Ganqi Gongyan). It excels in treating eye diseases and has no other known uses outside of this scope.
[Processing] It is produced in Shuzhong (Sichuan region). The tree grows over one zhang high, its leaves do not fall in winter, and its flowers are dense and fluffy, hence the name. Flowers are harvested in the second and third lunar months, cleaned, moistened with wine, and baked before use.
[Rougui / Cortex Cinnamomi]
[Harm] Rougui has a strong hot qi that tends to hyperactivate Yang Qi, penetrating both interior and exterior. For harmonying Ying Qi, dispersing exterior pathogens, inducing sweating, and consolidating Cou Li (interstitial spaces), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) is superior. Thus, Zhang Zhongjing used Guizhi to treat wind-cold injury in winter where pathogens remain in the exterior. Rougui and Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Preparatus) are essentially the same substance, differing only in that Guixin has the outer bark removed. Rougui travels inward to move blood, dispel cold, break blood stasis, and pacify the Liver. It enters the Right Kidney and Mingmen (Gate of Vitality) to tonify insufficiency of Ministerial Fire. However, it is strictly contraindicated in more than thirty conditions, including: metrorrhagia (Xuebeng), hematuria due to damp-heat (Xuelin), hematuria (Niaoxue), Yin deficiency, hematemesis (Tuxue), hemoptysis (Kexue), epistaxis (Bini), gingival bleeding (Chini), hematohidrosis (Hanxue), dysuria due to heat, constipation due to heat, cough due to Liver heat, Lung heat, failure of Qi to descend, upper heat symptoms with cold feet, postpartum blood loss, postpartum fever due to blood deficiency, chills and fever after miscarriage due to blood deficiency, five-palm heat due to Yin deficiency, stroke-like symptoms, facial paralysis (mouth and eye deviation), aphonia, dysarthria, hemiplegia, heatstroke with fainting, abdominal pain due to heat, female Yin deficiency with lower abdominal pain, all warm diseases, heat-type headache, thirst, Yang syndrome with macules and mania, pediatric pox/rash, abdominal pain with diarrhea, bloody heat in smallpox leading to dry, dark, and depressed lesions, female blood heat causing early menstruation, female Yin deficiency with internal heat causing amenorrhea, female Yin deficiency with alternating chills and fever, bitter taste and dry tongue, female blood heat causing dysmenorrhea, male and female Yin deficiency with internal heat and external cold, heatstroke with diarrhea, sudden profuse watery diarrhea like fire, all types of bloody dysentery (Zhixia Chunxue) due to latent heat in the Heart channel, intestinal wind bleeding (Changfeng Xiexue), visceral toxin rectal bleeding (Zangdu Bianxue), Yang collapse resembling Yin, nocturnal emission and seminal leakage, frequent erection due to deficient Yang, Yin exhaustion with blindness, etc. All these conditions require avoidance. Misapplication will bring swift disaster. One must carefully investigate the etiology, decide on treatment based on judgment, act according to clear understanding, and avoid uncertainty. Be extremely cautious and do not experiment blindly. Contraindicated with raw scallion (Cong Bai) and Halloysitum Rubrum (Shizhi).
[Efficacy] Rougui is sweet and acrid, extremely hot and warm. Its qi is thick and purely Yang. It enters the Blood aspect of the Liver and Kidney, tonifying insufficiency of Ministerial Fire in Mingmen. It benefits Yang and eliminates Yin, treats chronic cold and deep-seated cold, pacifies the Liver, directs Qi downward, guides fire back to its source (Yin Huo Gui Yuan), benefits fire to rescue primal Yang, warms the middle and supports the Spleen and Stomach, unblocks blood vessels, relieves lower jiao abdominal pain, and is effective for Ben Tun (running piglet sensation) and hernia masses (Shenjia). It promotes the efficacy of various herbs, induces abortion, and works well when combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber).
[Processing] Remove the rough bark before use. It can be ground into powder and added to decoctions, ensuring the aroma is not lost. Alternatively, it can be mixed with rice paste to form pills, swallowed first, or formed into pills with jujube flesh paste, swallowed as described above, administered according to symptoms. Removing the outer bark yields Guixin. Small branches with thinner aroma yield Guizhi. There is also a variety called Guanbing Gui, now referred to as Guiguan Gui, which only warms the interior and harmonizes Ying Qi.
