[Harm] It is purely Yang and aromatic-dry. It is strictly contraindicated for those with dry Yin-blood generating internal heat. Using it together with moxibustion will also severely damage Yin-blood; those with deficiency should exercise caution. If fetal restlessness is due to heat rather than cold; if dysentery with pus and blood occurs during pregnancy due to summer-heat and dampness; if there is extreme heat in the intestines and stomach, not merely a disease of dampness alone; if metrorrhagia (heavy uterine bleeding) is due to blood deficiency with internal heat; if menstruation arrives early due to blood heat; if hematemesis or epistaxis is due to blood deficiency; if hyperactive fire symptoms are caused by sudden malignant invasion (acute critical illness); if cholera with muscle cramps is not due to cold pathogen but due to spleen-stomach deficiency with stagnation, or caused by summer-heat and dampness; if infertility is due to blood deficiency rather than wind-cold invading the uterus—all these conditions forbid its use.
[Benefits] Raw mugwort is warm, cooked mugwort is hot. The pungent flavor can open orifices, and the bitter flavor can soothe and unblock. It enters the Lung, Spleen, Liver, and Kidney meridians, regulating Qi and Blood. It calms fetal energy and warms the uterus, so it is often required in gynecology for treating leukorrhea and regulating menstruation. It treats bloody dysentery and intestinal wind, manages metrorrhagia, hematemesis, and epistaxis. External moxibustion can eliminate hundred diseases; aged mugwort is superior. Vinegar-processed Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) serves as an guiding herb.
[Processing] On the third day of the third lunar month or the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, collect mugwort leaves, dry them in the sun, rub and pound them until cotton-like, called "cooked mugwort"; aged ones are usable. Mugwort from Qizhou is of the highest grade; fresh ones are preferred for decoction. Used raw, or burned into charcoal. For gynecological pills, boil in vinegar, pound into cakes, dry, then pound into powder for use.

[Harm] Its nature is warm and dry; it can cause blurred vision and induce sores. If one has excessive fire in the Stomach and Kidneys, frequent sexual arousal, or vomiting upon exposure to heat, it must be avoided. Star anise (Da Huixiang) is hot in nature and its functions are roughly similar.
[Benefits] Pungent, warm, and aromatic. It enters the Stomach, Liver, Kidney, and Bladder meridians. It primarily treats abdominal pain and hernia, pacifies cholera and rebellious blood, and works well when combined with wine.
[Processing] Harvest fruits in the eighth or ninth lunar months and dry in the shade. Those small like millet seeds are called "small fennel" (Xiao Huixiang), which have weaker potency and should be stir-fried with wine until yellow before use. Imported from foreign ships, the fruits are large like cypress seeds, splitting into eight segments, with one seed the size of a bean, yellow-brown in color, containing kernels, and tasting sweeter. Commonly known as "Bo Huixiang," also called "Ba Jiao Huixiang" (Star Anise) or "Da Huixiang." When used in formulas for the Lower Jiao, stir-fry with salt water.
