[Agriolimax]
Flavor and nature: Salty, cold; non-toxic. Indications: Wind-stroke (stroke caused by wind pathogen) with hemiplegia or facial paralysis, tendon injury, rectal prolapse, palpitations, epilepsy, and muscle spasms. ("Agriolimax" is pronounced like "kuo yu".)
(Agriolimax is also known as Yan You. The larger ones are the size of a human finger, plump and moist with mucus. They have two horns on their head which extend when moving and retract when startled. Applying their body mucus to wounds can stop bleeding.)
Agriolimax is born from the influence of rain and dampness, hence its salty and cold nature. Its main functions are to calm fright, clear heat, detoxify, and relax tendons. Kou Zongshi stated that Agriolimax can resolve centipede toxicity.
In recent times, for treating sore throat and swelling due to wind-heat throat obstruction, it is picked up with the tip of a hairpin, inserted into the throat, and swallowed, leading to immediate cure.
[Helix pomatia / Snail]
Flavor and nature: Salty, cold; slightly toxic. Indications: Wind-stroke with hemiplegia, traumatic injuries, large intestine rectal prolapse, tendon stiffness, and palpitations/epilepsy. (Appended in *Bie Lu*.)
(Agriolimax and snails are two types of the same animal. Those carrying shells are called snails, while those without shells are called agriolimax. Their therapeutic indications and functions are identical.)
Snails, also known as Wo Lei, are generated by the transformation of rain and dampness and belong to the category of shelled insects. Their flavor and nature are salty and cold, capable of clearing heat and detoxifying. The shell belongs to Metal, which can dispel wind and calm fright. The large intestine belongs to the Yangming channel; cold causes contraction, while heat causes relaxation, thus explaining these indications.
[Dew Honeycomb]
Flavor and nature: Sweet, neutral; toxic. Indications: Palpitations, epilepsy, convulsions, evil qi of cold and heat, manic-depressive psychosis, gu poison, intestinal hemorrhoids. Roasting over fire before use is beneficial.
(The honeycomb is the nest built by hornets, suspended on trees and exposed to wind and dew, hence named Dew Honeycomb. It is formed by earth and water. Large ones are like jars, small ones... Formed by earth and water and receiving the cooling qi of fog and dew, it primarily dispels wind, detoxifies, calms fright, and clears heat. Zhongjing's Biejia Jian Wan uses it. Recent physicians use it to treat toothache, rectal prolapse, attack toxins, detoxify, clear heat, and dispel wind. Scholars should comprehend this through reasoning.)
[Sepiae Endoconcha / Cuttlebone]
Flavor and nature: Salty, slightly warm; non-toxic. Indications: Leukorrhea (red and white discharge) and amenorrhea in women, genital ulceration and swelling, cold-heat masses, and infertility.
(Cuttlefish lives in the sea, shaped like a leather bag, with the mouth under the abdomen, eight feet clustered around the mouth, no scales but with whiskers, black skin and white flesh. There is only one bone on its back, three to four fen thick, smaller at both ends and wider in the center, pure white in color, light and brittle texture like Akebia stem, with layered patterns, which can be scraped into powder with fingernails. The blood and gall inside are black as ink, usable for writing, but the marks fade after a year, leaving only empty paper. This bone is called Hai Piao Xiao in *Su Wen*, now commonly known as Hai Piao Xiao.)
Cuttlebone inherits the essence of Metal and Water. Metal can pacify Liver Wood, thus treating blood stasis, swelling, pain, cold-heat masses. Water can nourish marrow, thus treating red and white leukorrhea and female infertility. *Su Wen* states: For young people who suffered massive blood loss or engaged in intercourse while drunk, leading to exhaustion of middle qi and liver damage, resulting in scanty or absent menstruation, the disease is named Blood Withering. The treatment involves four parts Hai Piao Xiao and one part Qian Cao (Rubia cordifolia), ground into powder, formed into pills using quail eggs, sized like small beans. Take five pills per dose, washed down with Mullet broth.
