Taste sweet, nature slightly warm, non-toxic. Enters the Lung Meridian.
Treats cough due to Lung cold, and *chuan shi gu zheng* (a chronic consumptive disease characterized by steaming bone sensation). Kills roundworms (*Ascaris lumbricoides*), tapeworms (*Taenia saginata*), removes flies, lice, pinworms, and mosquitoes.
Similar in appearance to *Tian Dong* (Radix Asparagi), and similar in usage, hence named "Wild Tian Dong". However, *Tian Dong* treats Lung heat, whereas this herb treats Lung cold; this is the distinction.
For individuals with Spleen and Stomach deficiency, it must be used together with tonifying herbs, lest it damage Stomach Qi, and lest it cause loose stools.
Taste sweet, nature cold, non-toxic. Enters the Lung and Kidney meridians. *Di Huang* (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) and *Bei Mu* (Fritillariae Bulbus) serve as guides or auxiliaries.
Avoid carp. Use after removing the heart.
Calms wheezing and coughing; treats Lung atrophy (*Fei Wei*) and Lung abscess (*Fei Yong*); this is its power to moisten dryness. Replenishes essence and marrow, eliminates blood stasis and phlegm; is this not its power to nourish Yin? It excels at killing three types of parasites and can unblock both urination and defecation.
Sweet and cold nature nourishes Yin; it is a key herb for treating deficient heat of the Lung and Kidney.
*Tian Dong* is cold and slippery in nature. For those with Spleen deficiency accompanied by diarrhea and anorexia, it is highly unsuitable. Even if such symptoms are present, do not administer lightly.
Taste pungent and bitter, nature slightly cold, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Lung meridians. *Hou Po* (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) serves as an auxiliary.
Averse to *Qin Jiao* (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix). Incompatible with *Wu Tou* (Aconiti Radix). Use after removing the heart; stir-fry with glutinous rice until the rice is cooked.
Eliminates phlegm, moistens the Lung, clears heat, and calms the Heart. It is essential for treating wheezing, coughing, and hemoptysis (coughing up red sputum). Regarding mental depression and stagnation, its effect is miraculous.
Pungency tends to enter the Lung, bitterness tends to enter the Heart. Generally, clearing the Heart and descending Qi allows the Lung to remain tranquil. Furthermore, it is moistening and resolves phlegm, thus achieving great merit in the West (Lung belongs to Metal, located in the West).
Wang Ji stated: "Common people replace *Ban Xia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma) with *Bei Mu* because *Ban Xia* is drying and toxic. They do not know that *Bei Mu* treats Dry Phlegm of Lung Metal, while *Ban Xia* treats Damp Phlegm of Spleen Earth. How can they be substituted? The Spleen is damp earth, thus it prefers dryness; the Lung is dry metal, thus it prefers moisture. If phlegm resides in the Spleen meridian, mistakenly using the moistening property of *Bei Mu* attacks what the Spleen dislikes,反而 increasing the disease severity. Therefore, Cold Phlegm, Damp Phlegm, Wind Phlegm, Food-Stagnation Phlegm, and Phlegm caused by Kidney deficiency with water overflowing are all not within the scope of treatment for Chuan Bei Mu."
Taste sweet, nature neutral, non-toxic. Enters the Lung Meridian. Soak *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) in decoction, remove rootlets, and bake.
Treats severe wheezing and gasping with a sense of impending death, and relieves chest fullness and difficulty in breathing.
By absorbing the Qi of Autumn and the flavor of Earth, it has divine efficacy in clearing the Lung. For a rattling sound in the throat resembling a water chicken, administration leads to immediate recovery.
*Bai Qian* (Cynanchi Stauntonii Rhizoma et Radix) has no tonifying properties. It is suitable for cases of Lung excess with pathogenic obstruction; otherwise, it should be contraindicated.
