Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen)
Taste: Acrid. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Meridian Tropism: Lung Meridian. Guiding Drug: Ulmus Radix Cortex (Yupi). Processing: Stir-fried with wine.
Functions to diffuse Lung Qi and direct rebellious Qi downward, calming wheezing and panting; eliminates phlegm and promotes urination, regulates abdominal distension and unblocks meridians. It is highly effective for fluid accumulation in the ears.
The "Ten Categories" states: "Draining agents can remove obstruction," referring to herbs like Tinglizi and Dahuang. However, their nature is purgative and sharp, so they should not be mixed indiscriminately. There are two types: sweet and bitter. The sweet variety has a slightly milder efficacy.
Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex)
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Meridian Tropism: Lung Meridian. Guiding Drugs: Duanmu Xu Duan (Duanmu), Rouxin (Guixin), Huomaren (Hemp Seed).
Processing: Scrape off the rough outer bark, stir-bake with honey water. If sputum-like exudate appears during processing, do not discard it.
Action: Drains excess heat from the Lung Metal, stops wheezing and calms coughs. Unblocks stagnation in the Small Intestine, expels water and relieves distension. Directs Qi downward, dissipates blood stasis, quenches thirst, and eliminates dry phlegm.
Directing Qi downward and draining the Lung is its specific function. Promoting urination to remove water utilizes the method of "draining the son" (treating the organ by draining its child organ in the Five Elements cycle).
Note: Sangbaipi drains fire. It should not be used for patients with Lung deficiency without fire, or for coughs caused by wind-cold.
Mulberry Fruit (Sangshen): Although it can nourish blood, it should not be used by those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency and loose stools.

Clears the Metal (Lung) and has the ability to calm coughs; clears phlegm and has the effect of stabilizing wheezing.
Its nature is light and ascending, benefiting the highest organ (Lung). Its root is called Qingmuxiang and can be applied topically to treat various toxic heat swellings.
