Bitter, slightly pungent, neutral in nature.
Dispel wind-dampness, activate collaterals and vessels. Indicated for joint pain and limb numbness.
This herb treats Bi syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness; its action is steady and reliable.
Bitter, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians.
Eliminates the harm of wind-dampness, regulates pain in the waist and knees. Can be applied topically to treat scabies and tinea (skin sores), and also treats dental worms (tooth decay pain).
For waist and knee pain not caused by wind-dampness, it should not be used. To treat tinea and toothache, it must be used in combination with other herbs.
Commonly known as Ban Gen. Bitter, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
Invigorates blood, relieves pain, clears and promotes the discharge of damp-heat. For chronic Bi syndrome and Li Jie disease (painful deformity of joints), it can restore flexibility to stiff joints. It can be soaked in wine for internal consumption or external rubbing.
For diffuse swelling of hands and feet, decoct the soup for soaking.
Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Pungent, bitter, slightly warm in nature. Enters the Heart and Kidney meridians.
Dispels wind-dampness, unblocks collaterals. Can relax sinews, regulates Qi. Indicated for frequent recurrence of joint pain and limited flexion and extension of the waist and knees.
This vine also treats traumatic injuries from falls.
Pungent, warm in nature, non-toxic. The tibial bone is most effective. Prepared with su (animal fat) roasting.
Strengthens sinews and bones, enabling those with flaccidity to stand; searches out toxic wind, relieving spasmodic pain.
"Wind follows the tiger"; when the tiger roars, wind arises. Therefore, this bone can enter the bone to search out wind.
Ancient name: Ling Li Jia (Scales of Pangolin). Salty, cold in nature, toxic. Prepared by roasting until yellow.
Searches out wind, expels phlegm, breaks blood stasis, opens Qi flow. Excellent for treating malaria. Treats swellings and toxins: if not yet suppurated, it dissipates them; if already suppurated, it causes them to ulcerate. Regulates painful Bi syndrome; acting on the upper body, it ascends; acting on the lower body, it descends.
It lives in burrows in mountains and feeds near water, capable of penetrating collaterals, reaching everywhere, and arriving directly at the site of pathology to achieve success. This is a key principle: use the scale corresponding to the location of the disease. Its nature is fierce; do not overdose.
Salty, warm in nature, toxic. Remove head and tail, soak in wine for three nights. The skin and bones are highly toxic and must be completely removed.
Mainly treats paralysis of hands and feet, and soft pain in limbs and joints; treats facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes), and spasms and tightness of sinews and vessels. Equally precious for treating leprosy (Li Feng) and tetanus (Po Shang Feng); equally valued for acute convulsive disorder (Ji Jing) and chronic convulsive disorder (Man Jing).
Penetrates bone to search out wind, stops convulsions and tremors. It is an essential herb for treating wind disorders, reaching internally to viscera and externally to skin, going nowhere without effect. Patients taking it must strictly avoid exposure to wind.
Those produced in Qizhou are the best, but hard to obtain. Characteristics: dragon head and tiger mouth, black body with white patterns, twenty-four square "Sheng" patterns under the ribs, bead-like spots on the abdomen, four long teeth in the mouth, claws one to two fen long on the tail, intestines like linked beads, eyes bright as if alive. Those from other places may have both eyes closed or one open and one closed.
White-scaled snake (Bai Hua She): Nature is penetrating and toxic, suitable only for those with genuine wind pathogens. Contraindicated for stroke-like conditions due to deficiency. Wu Shao She has similar effects but is non-toxic and weaker in potency. Black as lacquer, with a thin tail and ridge, is considered good.
