**Segment 1:**
Bitter in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Kidney Meridian. Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen, 玄参) serves as the guiding herb (Shi Yao). It is incompatible with Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi, 菟丝子), and Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba (Loulu, 漏芦); it opposes Veratri Nigrum Rhizoma et Radix (Lilu, 藜芦). Soak in rice washing water overnight, steam, and then dry in the sun.
It clears heat, removes dampness, promotes urination, and strengthens teeth. It treats carbuncles, sores, ulcers, and intestinal bleeding. It is urgently needed for conditions such as leprosy, scabies, and tinea.
Bitter and cold, it is a purely Yin substance, thus effective in regulating damp-heat. The toxins of sores and intestinal [bleeding/dysentery] are faults caused by dampness steaming and heat obstructing; hence, it is suitable as the primary agent. Teeth are the surplus of bones; clearing the Kidney ensures the bones remain firm.
Note: Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen, 苦参) is extremely bitter and cold. It not only damages the Stomach but also chills the essence. Unless one has an extreme heat constitution, how dare one administer it lightly?
**Segment 2:**
Bitter, sour, and salty in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart, Stomach, and Liver meridians. Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) serves as the guiding herb. It is incompatible with Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Wutou, 乌头) and Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Wuhui, 乌喙). Salt should be avoided.
It resolves irritability and heat, calming the Heart; it sweeps away palpitations, mania, and evil influences. It disperses wind toxicity, clearing the Liver; dim vision and phlegm obstruction dissipate together. For hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, and strangury, administration stops them immediately.
It is used to eliminate carbuncles, ulcers, and back abscesses. Its detoxification power exceeds that of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), and its pathogen-dispelling efficacy surpasses that of Bovaris Calculus (Niuhuang, 牛黄).
Although Rhinoceros Cornu (Xijiao, 犀角) has the merit of penetrating from top to bottom, it merely cools blood, detoxifies, dispels pathogens, and clears heat.
Its nature is extremely cold; those without an extreme heat constitution dare not take it lightly. Pregnant women taking it in large amounts can dissipate fetal qi.
**Segment 3:**
Bitter and sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Liver meridians. Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) serves as the guiding herb. It is incompatible with Ossis Ferreae Preparatum (Longgu, 龙骨), Gentianae Radix (Longdan, 龙胆), Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang, 地黄), Dichroae Radix (Changshan, 常山), and Blatta Orientalis (Feileng, 蜚蠊). It fears Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝) and Dryobalanops aromatica Resina (Ganqi, 干漆).
It clears the烦 (irritability) of the Heart Master; heat, mania, and evil influences are all eliminated. It secures the Soul of the Liver; palpitations, epilepsy, and forgetfulness are treated together. It benefits phlegm-Qi without stagnation and enters the sinews and bones to search out wind.
Li Dongyuan said: "Bovaris Calculus (Niuhuang, 牛黄) enters the Liver to treat sinews. For stroke where the pathogen enters the Zang organs, it is used to enter the bones and pursue wind. If the pathogen enters the Fu organs or meridians, misuse will instead draw wind into the bones, like oil entering flour, unable to be extracted."
**Segment 4:**
Sweet in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Liver meridians.
It detoxifies, clears heat, calms the Heart, and pacifies the Liver. When heat disease transmits inward, causing the five viscera to burn fiercely, leading to coma, delirium, and restlessness, it can rescue from external shock (Ke Wu) and stop epilepsy.
It is used in the Zhibao Dan (Treasure Pill) of the Bureau Formulas, which is an excellent remedy for emergencies.
