Sour in flavor, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. Polygoni Orientalis Fructus (Liaoshi) serves as a guide drug. Contraindicated with Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), and Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji). Moisten with wine, remove the pits, and dry over a mild fire.
It tonifies the Kidney and assists Yang; there is no need to worry about soreness or weakness of the lower back and knees. It consolidates essence and reduces urination; how could one worry about symptoms of seminal emission and urinary incontinence? It can stop excessive menstrual flow. It restores hearing for those suffering from tinnitus. It benefits the Kidney and nourishes the Liver, providing dual supplementation of Yin and Yang.
The regulations of the four seasons are such that the Qi of Spring is warm and promotes growth, while the Qi of Autumn is cool and promotes withering. The nature of all things prefers warmth and dislikes cold. The vital essence and Qi of the human body also rely on warmth to become sufficient. Moreover, since the Kidney and Liver reside in the position of extreme Yin, without the Qi of warmth, isolated Yin cannot generate [Yang]. Cornus Officinalis Fructus (Shanzhuyu) precisely enters these two meridians; its warm nature primarily tonifies, and its sour flavor primarily astringes. Thus, the vital essence increases and the lower back and knees become strong.
It should not be used by those with impotence despite strong Yang potential, or by those with difficulty in urination.
Sweet and sour in flavor, bitter, acrid, and salty in the seed, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung and Kidney meridians. Cistanches Herba (Congrong) serves as a guide drug. It is inimical with Glehniae Radix (Weirui). Use raw for cough medicines, and lightly roast for tonic medicines. Those from Liaodong that are plump and moist are superior.
It nourishes the insufficient Water of the Kidney meridian, strengthens Yin, astringes essence, clears heat, and relieves thirst. It gathers the dissipating Metal of the Lung Qi, treats cough and stabilizes asthma, stops sweating, and consolidates the intestines.
Jiegu said: "Taking Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) in summer causes spiritual energy to suddenly increase and muscle strength in both legs to surge forth." Dongyuan said: "To收敛 (gather/astringe) dilated pupils, it is a must-use herb for fiery heat conditions." Danxi said: "To gather the Lung and protect the Kidney, it is a must-use herb for fiery coughs. Although Schisandrae Fructus has many functions, the four characters 'gather Lung and protect Kidney' are sufficient to encompass them all."
Schisandrae Fructus is an essential herb. Many people dare not use it because they have been misled by Kou Zhi's theory of deficiency-heat. However, it is strictly contraindicated when wind-pathogens are at the exterior, when carbuncles and rashes are initially erupting, when there is any retention of fluids, or when the Lung house has excess heat.
Sour and sweet in flavor, neutral in nature. Enters the Lung, Spleen, and Kidney meridians.
It supplements Qi and strengthens power, strengthens sinews and bones. It consolidates essence and Qi, preserves complexion. It astringes Lung Metal and treats chronic cough.
Stop using this medicine once efficacy is achieved; it should not be used routinely. It is also a substance that provides dual supplementation of Yin and Yang.
