(Also known as Yehe [Night-closing Tree]. It is rarely recognized by the common people. This is likely because it lacks miraculous efficacy in treating diseases.)
[Wood Bark] (Referring to Albiziae Cortex)
[Aroma and Flavor]
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Calms the five Zang organs. Harmonizes the mind and spirit. Brings joy and eliminates worry. Long-term consumption lightens the body and improves vision. Decocted into a paste, it reduces carbuncles and swellings. Heals tendons and bones. Kills parasites. Mixed with soot from the bottom of a cauldron and applied with raw oil, it treats spider bites. Leaves can be used to wash stains off clothes. For traumatic injuries and pain, ground into powder and taken with wine (2 qian bi), it harmonizes blood, reduces swelling, and relieves pain. Albizia belongs to Earth; its ability to nourish Yin is very rapid. It promotes muscle growth and heals tendons and bones, which can be seen from these effects. When combined with white beeswax for use in plasters, the effect is miraculous, yet surgeons have not adopted it. Why?
[Aroma and Flavor]
Sweet, slightly pungent, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Treats all kinds of sores, toxins, and arrow wounds. Finely ground and taken with wine (1-2 qian), and applied externally.
[Aroma and Flavor]
(Missing)
[Indications]
Wind disorders. Treats rheumatic fluid accumulation (Rheumatism flowing through collaterals and joints), Li-jie disease (migratory joint pain), Crane-knee wind (swollen knees resembling a crane's knee), numbness, itching. Traumatic sores and swellings. Used in medicinal wines. **Yingzisu** (also known as Yu Mi, i.e., Papaver somniferum).
[Rice] (Referring to Papaveris Semen)
[Aroma and Flavor]
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications]
For attacks caused by Dan-shi (mineral drugs) where one cannot eat. Cooked with bamboo sap into porridge, it is delicious. Moves wind qi. Expels pathogenic heat. Treats regurgitation and phlegm stagnation in the chest. Treats dysentery and diarrhea causing intestinal rot and dryness.
(Honey gets its name because it forms densely. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* originally called it "Shimi" [Rock Honey], presumably considering that honey produced on rocks to be the best. However, later commentators raised doubts and debates. Now, directly titling it "Fengmi" [Honey] is the correct name. To test honey: insert a red-hot iron rod into it and pull it out. If steam rises, it is genuine; if smoke rises, it is fake.)
[Aroma and Flavor]
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Pathogenic factors in the heart and abdomen; various frights, epilepsy, and spasms. Calms the deficiencies of the five Zang organs. Replenishes Qi and tonifies the Middle Jiao. Relieves pain and detoxifies. Eliminates various diseases. Harmonizes hundreds of herbs. Long-term consumption strengthens willpower, lightens the body, prevents hunger, delays aging, and prolongs life. Nourishes Spleen Qi. Removes mental restlessness and anorexia. Stops intestinal dysentery (Chang Pi). Relieves pain in the muscles. Treats mouth ulcers. Improves hearing and vision. Treats dental caries (Gan Ji). Treats lip and oral ulcers. Treats red eye obstructions. Kills parasites. Treats sudden heart pain and bloody-white dysentery. Drinking a bowl of honey water at once stops symptoms. Alternatively, mix ginger juice and honey (each 1 he), add water, and drink at once. Regular consumption makes the face rosy like flowers. Treats stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen due to blood stasis, and bloody-white dysentery. Taking one spoonful each with fresh Rehmanniae Juice induces bowel movement. Applying a paste of Scallion White (Xie Bai) and honey to burns stops pain immediately. Harmonizes Ying and Wei. Moistens Zang and Fu organs. Unblocks the Triple Burner. Regulates the Spleen and Stomach. Bees gather nectar from non-toxic flowers and transform it via their digestive process into honey. This is what is meant by "rotten things generating miracles." Its medicinal functions are fivefold: clearing heat, tonifying the middle, detoxifying, moistening dryness, and relieving pain. Raw honey is cool in nature, thus capable of clearing heat. Cooked honey is warm in nature, thus capable of tonifying the middle. Sweet and peaceful, thus capable of detoxifying. Soft and moistening, thus capable of relieving dryness. Slowness can relieve urgency, thus capable of stopping pain from heart, abdominal, muscular, and ulcerous conditions. Harmony achieves balance, thus capable of harmonizing hundreds of herbs, working similarly to Licorice Root (Gancao). Zhang Zhongjing used the Honey Suppository method (Mi Jian Dao Fa) to treat Yangming constipation and inability to defecate, which is truly a divine prescription for millennia. Whenever one feels heat and disharmony in the four limbs, drinking a bowl of honey water is very beneficial.
