Suxmu (Sappan Wood): Sweet, salty, and pungent in flavor; neutral in nature. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung, Hand-Shaoyin Heart, Hand-Jueyin Pericardium, Foot-Taiyin Spleen, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney, and Foot-Jueyin Liver meridians. Its function is specifically to promote blood circulation and remove stasis, and to disperse wind pathogens from the exterior and interior. When taken with Ruxiang (Frankincense) dissolved in wine, it treats postpartum rebellious flow of stale blood ascending. When combined with Renshen (Ginseng), it treats stale blood entering the lungs due to deficiency, accompanied by asthmatic breathing in a critical condition due to deficiency. For severed fingers caused by knives or axes, apply the powder topically and bind securely with silkworm cocoons to reattach. It is contraindicated for those with extreme deficiency and no blood stasis.
Ruxiang (Frankincense): Bitter and pungent in flavor; warm in nature. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung, Foot-Taiyin Spleen, Foot-Yangming Stomach, and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridians (Note: Original text says "Hand-Foot Taiyin, Foot Yangming, Shaoyin", translated literally). Its function is specifically to treat Qi strangury and cold essence. Combined with Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), it treats retention of urine due to bladder torsion. Combined with Roucongrong (Cistanche Stem), it treats constipation due to large intestine deficiency. Combined with Zisu (Perilla Leaf) and Baokouren (White Cardamom Seed) ground into powder, taken with Shidi (Persimmon Calyx) decoction, it treats chronic hiccups due to stomach cold. The variety that sinks in water and is black in color is superior. In decoctions, grind into juice; in pills and powders, wrap in paper and place in the bosom until dry, then grind. Avoid fire processing.
Moyao (Myrrh): Pungent in flavor; warm in nature. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney, Hand-Yangming Stomach, and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians. Its function is specifically to harmonize the Spleen and Lungs, benefit the chest and diaphragm, eliminate evil qi, and guide Stomach Qi upward to promote appetite. Combined with Danshen (Salvia Root) and Sharen (Amomum Fruit), it treats various heart and abdominal pains in women.
Xuexie (Dragon's Blood): Pungent in flavor; warm in nature. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Its function is specifically to treat fractures and metal wounds, stop bleeding, and relieve pain. Combined with Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) and Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), it treats vomiting of bloody stasis. Applied as powder to metal wounds, it heals without scarring. For liver injury due to anger, using Dai Yujin (Substitute Turmeric/Sappanwood - *Note: Text says 'use Dai Yujin', likely referring to the efficacy of this herb acting like or substituting for Turmeric in this context, or a specific preparation*) is highly effective. Also known as Zitengxiang.

Combined with Ganshe (Sugarcane) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), it treats morning and evening vomiting. Combined with Shidi (Persimmon Calyx), it treats hiccups. Combined with Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), it treats Ben Tun (fleeing pig/qi attack). Combined with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), it treats injury caused by eating crab. It is hot and drying in nature; contraindicated for conditions not due to deficiency-cold. The female form is called Mu Dingxiang (Mother Clove), which is also known as Jishe Xiang. Xunluxiang (Frankincense/Olibanum): Pungent in flavor; warm in nature. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Its function is specifically to invigorate blood and relax tendons. Combined with Zhike (Bitter Orange), it facilitates smooth delivery. Combined with 1 qian of Chensha (Cinnabar), 5 qian of Zaoren (Sour Jujube Seed), and 5 qian of Ruxiang (Frankincense), taken with wine, it treats mania and madness. One must drink freely until drunk and sleep for one or two days without disturbance for the disease to cure; otherwise, it is difficult to treat. Adding Renshen (Ginseng) makes it Ningzhi Gao (Peaceful Mind Paste). Combined with Congbai (Scallion White) in equal parts and pounded, applied externally, it treats penile pain. It is sticky and hard to grind; place the mortar in hot water and grind together with Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus Pith) to make it fine. Use water flotation method. Also known as Xunluxiang.
